There was no happy reunion when the groups met back up at the Wheeler house. Dustin and Steve took hold of Scarlett and refused to be more than a foot away from her at all times. When offered, Max refused a hug in fear she'd start crying again. They went over their theory again as they made music loops for Scarlett and Max to keep them safe. Scarlett would now spend every breathing second of the foreseeable future with Don McLean singing in her ear. How her father would have enjoyed her favourite song, it had been his favourite too.
"If the connection is trauma," Nancy frowned and looked down at the table with all their notes. "Why not come for more of us?" She posed an interesting question. Grief couldn't be the differentiating factor, Chrissy wasn't grieving anyone as far as Floyd was aware.
Scarlett tapped her fingers on the table, she looked over to Max. She pushed herself off and approached Max, who was sitting in the corner of the basement. The girl was still fidgety, eyes wide as she nodded along to Kate Bush. "Hey Max." Scarlett leaned down so she was eye to eye with Max.
Max had mentioned she had a vision of Billy and then arrived in what she described as a red world. The girl hadn't gone into detail about what Vecna had told Max. "Hey." Max tried to force a smile, but it faded. She had no energy to keep up a facade. And there was no need, she was talking to Scarlett. The woman who hadn't hesitated to throw herself in between Max and Billie even when she had a broken hand.
"Can we talk? Do you want to?" Scarlett asked, momentarily pausing American Pie to focus on the girl sitting in front of her.
After a second of hesitation, Max relented and the duo stalked off up the stairs for some privacy. Steve screamed after them that they both had to keep their music going and feet on the ground. "What...?" Max trailed off, it was very obvious what Scarlett wanted to know.
"We were singin'
Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levy
but the levy was dry
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die,
This'll be the day that I die"
Scarlett screwed her eyes shut and inhaled. No tears, those weren't allowed. The woman pulled her headphones down so they dangled around her neck, Max mirrored her. They sat together in a moment of blissful silence on the Wheeler couch. "We should eat..." Scarlett looked back at the fridge. It was date night for Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler, which meant no ready dinner. Holly was staying over at her grandparents' house. "What are you in the mood for?"
