did you ever wonder
why you laughed louder
when no one was listening?
or did you ever think
the party was lonely with
my absence?
did you know
i noticed the way you leaned in
only when the room felt temporary?
were you aware
that you said my name differently
when you were about to leave?
do you remember
telling me i was special
like it was a shared secret,
not a warning?
do you remember calling me
the best girl you have ever met,
under the night sky?
or the time when you confessed
to me in a digital message,
that you would rather have just
made me the 'one'?
when you found me,
was it relief
or rehearsal?
did you mean it
when you asked me to stay,
or was that just something
you liked hearing echoed back?
were you lonely,
or just allergic to being alone?
do you still tell the story
like it happened to you,
or have you finally admitted
you were present
the whole time?
and tell me—
when you think of us now,
do you miss me,
or do you miss
how easily
you were forgiven?
well, i just wonder.
