I thought I'd found
the free in freedom,
but I couldn't comprehend why
I chose the cage again.
Thought I knew
what I was getting into —
shimmery imprisonment again,
but oh, oh, oh,
I'm wrong again,
but there is no surprise here.
We've looked through the millstone,
they promised with ease,
and this way is not like quicksand.
It'll paint the hue of brightest golden
on your ebony canvas,
and it'll be worth all again.
We did our research,
but my, my, my,
I should've listened
to the feeble protests
of my doleful heart.
I brought a pig in the poke,
because they sold me the pup.
I thought I was just overreacting,
I wrongly and blindly just believed
its cap was a shiny helmet.
You'll just throw a sprat,
and catch a mackerel,
I was promised easily,
but I, I, I,
spent every second in this glided cage,
by stripping my soul.
Stealing someone's thunder,
or becoming the reason why
I don't want to get up the next day,
is what they do here in a rickety beat.
I thought I had finally escaped the wolves,
but I've had it by the ears all along,
and look, look, look,
they have expelled me to Coventry,
because they had other fish to fry.
We promise we saw which way
the wind was blowing,
they yell with forked tongues,
but tossed my good money
in an ephemeral beat, 'cause
they had bees in the bonnet.
Yet see, see, see,
I let the sleeping dogs lie,
because how else do you choose
between the untamed devil
and the deep, dark sea?
and when tears finally cascade
my statue-countenance,
they passed the buck back to me,
and lord did that feel like
drowning in a sea, despite knowing
I once knew how to swim.
The sharks choose me, me, me,
I thought resting on my laurels
was finally in my stars,
but I was hoisted above,
tightly bound to a petard.
We gave you the home truths,
they hauled over the coals.
You made the waves —
in what is calm sea for all,
and just for the record,
it's not our fault that
You went down the flames,
and got the short end of the stick.
But hey, hey, hey,
let me just take a moment
to congratulate you all,
on your beautiful mission,
before I finally swallow the venom.
