We Were Something

We are something, don't you think so?
Was all that you ever said—so—before
            Your hands went cold,
When I divulged my diamond doubts.

Your hands slipped from mine
as I whispered of midnight misgivings,
               of bright champagne blues.
but, I promised, we could try to make it work.

 Your hands leaned away
     When I said our tide
was racing faster than the wind,
                  Brighter than a dripping candle.

I was luckless enough to afford the luxury of loss,
or so they said, when I spoke of our candlelit catastrophe.
"How could you not see it?" they taunted.
                 "You're blind—a first-class heartache." they whispered.

But didn't I see it?
    The crystal c r a c k s, the rose-gold regrets,
the silk-lined sorrow, the gilded grief of guilt—
Do you really think I never saw it coming?
