Chapter Sixty-Three

Morning broke over Shanghai with ruthless efficiency, sunlight slipping through the curtains of the Orchid and catching on glass and steel across the skyline, but inside the city's digital bloodstream was already on fire. Phones buzzed. Tablets chimed. Notifications stacked faster than anyone could clear them.

By the time Yao woke, curled half against Sicheng's side with her hair a mess and her cheek pressed into his shoulder, the internet had already declared war on her behalf. She squinted at the sound of his phone vibrating for the third time in under a minute. "Mmm... if that's another alarm, I'm suing," she muttered sleepily.

"It's not an alarm," Sicheng said quietly, eyes already open as he checked the screen.

She cracked one eye. "That tone means someone's life just ended."

He exhaled once, slow and controlled. "Three legal notices went out."

That got her fully awake. She pushed herself up onto an elbow, blinking. "Three?"

He nodded. "Separate filings. Coordinated timing." He held the phone so she could see, the screen filled with headlines, reposts, screenshots of formal letters stamped with law firm insignias and bold subject lines.

HSIA HOLDINGS – FORMAL NOTICE OF DEFAMATION
LU FAMILY LEGAL COUNSEL – CEASE AND DESIST
WEI & YEON HSIA – NOTICE OF INTENT TO LITIGATE

Yao stared at it for a long moment before letting out a low whistle. "They didn't even wait for breakfast."

"They never do," he replied calmly.

Across the hotel, Wei was already seated at the small dining table in her suite, laptop open, posture immaculate, coffee untouched beside her. Yeon stood at the window with his phone pressed to his ear, voice even and precise.

"Yes," Yeon said, listening. "You have confirmation from all three platforms? Good. Archive everything. Screenshots, timestamps, transcripts. No edits."

Wei didn't look up. "Make sure the notices went to editorial leadership as well, not just the individual reporters."

Yeon nodded. "Already done. Their legal departments are scrambling."

Wei's lips curved faintly. "As they should." Her phone chimed again. She glanced down and allowed herself a small, satisfied breath. "Hsia Holdings' statement just went live."

In another suite, Hsia Yìchén sat rigidly upright in an armchair, cane resting against his knee, tablet balanced in his hands. His expression was unreadable as he reviewed the viral spread.
