Chapter Seventy-Six

Nearly a month later the quiet of the base was shattered well past midnight when Ming's phone began vibrating violently against the nightstand, the shrill insistence of the ringtone slicing through the exhaustion that had settled deep into his bones after an unforgiving day of training, and for a split second he stared at the ceiling disoriented before instinct overrode fatigue and he reached blindly for the device, already knowing no one called at that hour unless something had shifted irrevocably.

"Ming," came Yeon's voice the moment he answered, calm but edged tight in a way that immediately stripped away any lingering haze, "Wei is in labor."

There was no hesitation after that, no wasted breath, no second question beyond a clipped, "Which hospital," before Ming was already out of bed and moving, dragging on clothes with mechanical efficiency as the weight of the moment pressed down on his chest in a way nothing in competitive gaming ever had.

Within minutes the base was fully awake, doors opening, lights flicking on, footsteps pounding down the hall as word spread with the speed of adrenaline.

Yue nearly collided with Pang in the hallway as he demanded, "Is it happening,"

Lao Mao was already grabbing car keys and Rui was trying to call ahead to confirm room numbers.

"It is happening," Ming said flatly as he passed them, his expression set in a way that brooked no nonsense. "We are leaving now."

Cars peeled out in a staggered rush, engines cutting through the stillness of the sleeping city as they made for the hospital, and when they arrived the entrance was already a controlled storm of movement and fluorescent light, sliding doors parting to reveal a corridor filled with urgency and hushed voices.

Yichen stood near the reception desk with an air of cold authority that made the staff move faster simply by proximity, Lan at his side composed but pale, Li hovering nearby with visible tension in his shoulders, Lee Kun Hyeok standing quietly but alert as though awaiting orders, and Yeon stepping back just as Ming and the others rushed inside.

"She is upstairs," Yeon said immediately, stepping toward Ming. "They took her ten minutes ago."

"Is she—" Ming began with his entire being redaiting overprotectiveness.

"She is loud," Lan answered evenly, though there was unmistakable worry in her eyes. "Which means she is strong."

Before more could be said the elevator doors slid open and Jinyang burst out with Ai Jia close behind her, her hair half-tied and clearly thrown together in haste. "Do not start without me," she snapped at no one in particular as she stormed past.

"No one controls that," Ai Jia said breathlessly as he tried to keep pace.

Ming did not wait for commentary, striding toward the indicated hallway where a nurse directed him without delay toward the labor room, and as he reached the door he could already hear Wei's voice through the thick barrier, sharp and unfiltered and entirely unbothered by who might hear her fury.
