We soon made it to the mining fields, and it was just as I imagined it. Brown, large, and dark. There were miners all over the place, their thick beards covered in ore dust. They gave a small bow as Sky, Jason and I walked past. I gave a small smile, and the miner returned it."Hey Cooper, know any good mining spots?" I asked one of the miners that were closest to me. He nodded, and pointed his finger over at one of the far tunnels. I nodded to him in thanks, and Sky motioned me and Jason over to the far tunnel that Cooper had pointed out. He made sure we had everything; water, torches, and pick axes, before he started leading us down. It was hot, dark, and very cramped on the small staircase that led to the main chasm. We had to go down in a single file line, with Sky in the front, me in the middle, and Jason in the back. We were all so hunched together that I was able to feel Jason's warm breath on my neck.
"It's so dark down here." I muttered. Jason then quickly pulled out some flint and steal and a stick. With a quick flick of the wrist, the stick was on fire, and Jason was holding it high above his head so we could see our surroundings. I heard the sound of wind and a light breeze blew across my face. I smiled, realizing that we were approaching the main cave. Sure enough, we were down in the main cave in a matter of seconds. Jason placed the torch sturdily on the ground, and pulled the pickaxes out of our bags. He handed one to me and Sky.
"Ok. Me and Jason will head down this way." Sky said, pointing down a small tunnel nearby. "Ty, will you be ok by yourself?" Sky asked. I nodded.
"Of course I'll be fine Sky. Why wouldn't I be? We've done -yawn- this a million times before." I said, and Sky nodded, giving me a quick glance of uncertainty. Jason whispered something in Sky's ear, but I wasn't able to hear what he said.
"Alright then. Holler if you need us, ok?" Sky said, and I nodded. We then separated. I walked down one of the caves on the left, and Sky and Jason went down one on the right.
I listened to the sounds of the cave, the calm wind blowing in my face. I listened out for mobs, but luckily heard none. I hadn't been walking for more than 5 minutes before I found a vein of coal. I pulled out the iron pick Jason had given me, and threw it into the ore with a grunt. I pulled the pick back out, Adams repeated the step again. The coal ore broke, and little coal chucks landed on the ground, puffing a little bit of their awful black soot. I coughed as the soot flew into my face.
"Why does this stuff have to do that." I grumbled between coughs. I cleared my throat, even though it was burning, and repeated the process more and more times.
I had finally mined the last of the coal vein, each time adding another layer of the burning feeling to my throat. My throat was burning so badly that it felt like I had swallowed sandpaper. I picked up the final chunks of coal on the ground, threw them in my miner bag, and kept walking. I saw another vein of coal not too far from the first one, but I decided my throat wouldn't be able to handle anymore of the revolting soot. I could come back for the coal later.
(Time skip Lel)
I was starting to feel my sleepiness taking effect after 2 or 3 hours of being in the mines. My swings were slower, my eyes felt droopy, and I had nearly fallen into lava a few times because I hadn't been watching where my feet were going.
Maybe Sky was right. Maybe I should have stayed back. I thought to myself as I finished up a relatively small vein of iron.
Yea....I guess I should just go tell Sky that I feel too tired to mine anymore. I told myself. I picked up my miners bag, and made sure I had everything before I started to exit the cave.
