Kevin looked so peaceful, staring at me, making sure I was okay, but something about him just didn't look right. He had tears streaming down his cheeks. I sat down next to him, I wanted to let him know that I was okay, and that I would always be okay. I started to cry too, why had I been cursed? Why wasn't Jessie cursed with this stupid burden.

After sitting next to Kevin for a few minutes, and after we both stopped crying, I saw something walk behind the few trees in his yard. Kevin laid down and started to fall asleep next to me, so I decided to see what was lurking around.

"Kan," I whispered, hoping it was him. Kan stepped in front of the trees and approached me. He looked nervous about something, but I was too scared to ask. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from Kevin, who still sat beside me in silence.

Kan pulled me to the middle of the street and sun was shining down on us. He looked so peaceful, staring at me. I stared back at him, looking at his sparkling eyes. He leaned in close to me, and hugged me.

I was shocked and he hugged me tighter. We seemed to stand there forever, but the peaceful moment soon came to an end. He let me escape from the hug, but his hands were holding my face up. I looked at him as he looked back. He slightly smiled and whispered, "Thank you, for everything." He began to disappear.

"Kan, why are you thanking me, I've done nothing?" I asked as he disappeared into the sky. He looked so peaceful, smiling while being taken away from me. Was his nightmare ending?  When will mine end?  I didn't understand anything that was happening, so I stood there, waiting for myself to disappear. I pulled the rose out of my shirt pocket and stared at the stupid thing in disgust. I threw it on the floor and stopped on it until it was in pieces. I sat down and picked up the dirty petals and I let the breeze take them out of my hand. I was finally waking up, and it hit me, Kan was awake and now was my chance to finally see him.

I woke up next to Kevin and sprang to my feet. He was about to tell me something but I ignored him. I ran off, I realized I was barefoot, but I didn't care. The ground was warm and I felt free as I ran against the breeze. It was a good thing that I remembered where Kan's house was, because if I didn't,  I wouldn't have been able to see what happened to him.

I let out a small shriek as an ambulance pulled up next to his driveway. I ran onto his lawn and saw his mother crying beside his bed. No, no he couldn't be....dead?  I fell down to the floor and Kevin tried to pick me up once again, I didn't notice him following me. How could Kan be dead? Is this why he was thanking me, for the few times we had encountered each other?

I finally understood, this was the only way to escape.
