A Perfect Ending

I stared at Kevin who was originally staring at me. As he turned his focus to the clouds above I took my chance. He was smiling and revealing his dimples. He had a beautiful skin tone and freckles spotted his entire face. He widened his smile as he took another bite of his fro-yo. His eyes returned to me and I was so embarrassed.  He had caught me staring at him.

I acted like I was angry that he was staring at me, but truthfully I loved it. It made me feel like someone actually cared. I kept telling myself no and that I was just being silly. Kevin is my friend, and it would be weird if he became anything more.

"Why are you staring at me?" I asked, not knowing what else to say. He looked away and his cheeks grew red.

"You have frozen yogurt on your face," He said quietly. Lies. I wiped my face, pretending to believe his words. We ate the rest of our snack slowly and quietly, observing the happy faces all around us.

When we got up, we acted like nothing had happened. We walked to a nearby carnival and did all of the free things that we were able to do. Luckily, we were able to do many things. They were handing out free water and pizza, almost all of the rides were free too, or very cheap. We stayed at the carnival for about an hour before taking the trolley back home. Luckily we were able to sneak on without needing to show anybody our tickets that were no longer valid.

I rested my head on Kevin, being too tired to care about what was going through his mind as I had done so. He moved his shoulder so I would be more comfortable. I closed my eyes and my breathing began to slow and become more quieter, I was falling asleep. I woke up a few hours later, not knowing that Kevin carried me home. I must have been very tired. I checked my phone and read his texts that he had sent. He thanked me for going out with him today to get fresh air for once. I blushed. Why was he being so kind?

I laid back down and squeezed a pillow tight between my arms and chest. I embraced that pillow, wishing I was able to really embrace someone real. I giggled, finally acknowledging my feelings toward Kevin. I had forgotten about everything that had happened and reassured myself about my dad. My dad was going to be okay according to the doctors. Everything would be find. I was able to get my mind off things, eat a bit of rice that I had to warm up, and sleep once again, dreaming only about good things. I had decided that I had a perfect ending to a not-so-perfect day and smiled as I drifted off to sleep for the rest of the night.
