I rang the doorbell multiple times, waiting for Anne to open the door with a smile on her face. I grew tired of waiting and attempted to open the door. It was easier to "break in" than I had thought. As I opened the unlocked door, I heard quiet whimpers coming from the living room.
"Anne?" I called up the steps, no answer. As I walked towards the living room the sobs grew louder. There she was, lying on the floor, crying her heart out. I looked to the TV screen and saw an accident being replayed and talked about on the news station. The burning vehicle looked the same as her father's, but I didn't let myself believe so.
I sat down beside her and she wouldn't stop crying. I was laying next to her now. She was crying quieter and quieter as more minutes passed by. I was holding her as her cries quieted. The news show switched to another reporter who was at the scene of the accident. I turned down the volume, afraid that it would cause Anne to cry more. My back was facing the TV, but I could still hear the muffled voices speaking in amusement.
"It was a very difficult surgery, but we were able to save the young girl's father. I can't call her back using her dad's phone, she won't pick up. I hope she is watching this," The doctor who was now being interviewed spoke quietly. Anne's breathing started to slow and quiet. I was relieved, Anne's father would be ok. This was why she was crying, now when she woke up she would be ok. I stared at Anne's phone laying on the floor. The phone went off once more, it was her "dad" calling. I freed Anne from my arms and answered the phone. I walked to the kitchen so I wouldn't wake up Anne with my voice.
"Excuse me? Who is this?" Asked the anonymous person talking to me.
I responded with my name, Kevin, Mr. Young's daughter's friend (that was a mouthful to say). He told me to put Anne on the phone but I refused and just lied that he was on speaker.
"Anne, Your father was in a bad accident, I am sure you have already seen on the tv what had happened. He is fine though, we were able to save him. He will be awake in about an hour or two, so please hurry and come in to see your dad!" The doctor told us goodbye after giving us the name of the hospital. I put the phone on the couch and picked up Anne. After carrying her sleeping body to her room (It was a challenge to take her upstairs) and putting her on her bed, I walked down to make her some rice. It seemed that all she had was rice when I was looking through her pantry.
After about an hour of her sleeping, she slowly walked down the steps, asking about her dad. I reassured her and told her that the doctors were able to save his life. She trailed off from our conversation just as I was about to serve her steamed rice.
"Where is my phone," She said, panicking as it rang. I pointed to where it was and she quickly jumped to it.
"Hey mom...No, I wasn't able to get there yet...Yes the doctor called me, dad is ok apparently," She paused for a while before replying to her mother, "Kevin is with me...but I want to see him...no, let me see him mom," Her mother hung up and she slouched on the couch, tears coming to her eyes again.
I walked over to her with a plate of rice, hoping she would eat it.
"Is she not letting you see him?" I asked quietly.
She looked at me with tears streaming down her face, "No she isn't! She told me he has cuts all over his face and a black eye, also bruises all over his arms and legs. She thinks I can't handle it," She paused, wiping her face, "Look at me, I can handle it. I want to see my dad!" She sniffed again, and again, and again. I got up to get her a tissue, but she just pulled me back down next to her. I put the plate of rice on the floor and pulled her into my arms.
She cried for a while while holding onto me. My sweater had become wet with tears as she cried. She finally recuperated after receiving a text from her mom. I peeked over her shoulder and read the texts. Her mother apologized a few times and told her that Anne's father will be fine in a few days. She placed the phone in her back pocket and rested her head on a pillow.
"Can we go to get frozen yogurt?" She asked, "Just so I can get my mind off things?" I nodded, picking up the plate and making sure I still had my twenty bucks in my back pocket. I carefully made room for the plate of cold rice in the fridge, I almost dropped the plate, but luckily I didn't. That would have been bad.
We walked quietly to the trolley station, that being the fastest way to get to the middle of the city. We were lucky enough to squeeze in between two rude teenagers who kept picking on us.
"Are you guys dating? Do you like being this close to each other?" One boy wearing a very ugly beanie asked us. Anne leaned in closer to me because the other teen was getting closer to her.
"You sure are cute, wanna kiss?" The other man asked. He playfully puckered his lips, disturbing not only us but also his friend and the others around us. I pulled Anne up quickly and grabbed onto the pole in the middle of the trolley. I pulled her close to me and she kept her head town, I assume too embarrassed to face the inappropriate teens. The one who was sitting to my left made a face to his friend and then quickly apologized for their rudeness. As we neared our stop I pulled Anne out of the trolley and walked her to a bench.
"Are you okay?" I asked. I was very embarrassed at the events that had recently happened on the trolley. She nodded and blushed.
"He, He was about to kiss me!" She said making a disgusted look on her face. We laughed awkwardly together as we got up from the bench. She led me to the frozen yogurt place that seemed to be having a rather slow day. No one was in the building, except the person who worked the register. I looked around, oh so many flavors! I acted like a kid in a candy store when I had to choose between all of the different flavors. We finally payed for our fro-yo and exited the sad place. We walked to a nearby park and sat under a tree next to each other.
She looked so beautiful with the wind blowing her long hair. She was frustrated with her bangs and often moved them out of the way. She had soft looking pale skin and was absolutely beautiful with the sun shining down on her. Leaves were slowly falling off the tree, I looked at the sky above her and then back down at her. She was staring right at me, blushing.
