Another Day

I woke up in the morning to my obnoxious alarm and my mother calling me down from dinner. I rubbed my eyes and pulled on my pants and an old T-shirt. Chills were sent up my spine as I placed my bare feet onto the cold wooden floor. I shivered out of my room and walked down the steps that led into my kitchen. I was greeted with a plate full of delicious smelling food. There were two eggs, sunny-side up, and three pieces of bacon. I sniffed up the sweet aroma of the food and grabbed the plate politely from my mom.

She smiled as we took a seat at my table and I asked if we could see Anne after school today. She didn't seem to happy, "Oh sure, let's just go every single day!" I cringed up, disliking my mother's response. She must have seen my expression because she apologized quickly.

"I hope you know that Anne is a strong girl, everything will be okay," She said, trying to get rid of my uneasiness. She agreed with me in wanting to see Anne again. I had to wait until after school. After eating my breakfast, I put on a casual blue T-shirt and jeans. My mother knocked on my door and opened it. She had a package in her hand that she was trying to give to me. I forgot that we needed to start wearing uniforms for school, and I grabbed my packaged uniform grumpily. After changing again, I finally left the house.

I was earlier than usual for some reason and walked slower and slower with each passing moment. On the sidewalk I saw a little girl sitting and holding her knee close to her chest. She looked like she was in pain. When I neared her, I realized she was Jessie. She noticed me and pulled her sock up over her knee.

"Are you okay?" I asked. She nodded, and I figured that she was most likely lying right to my face. I walked beside her in silence, staring at her. She was barely bending her leg and was slightly limping. I asked her one more time which seemed to anger her.

"Stop worrying about my well-being!" She ordered, walking away quicker. I caught up to her again and offered to carry her on my back. When I slightly bent down in front of her, she kicked me and I stumbled. She started to walk away faster this time, but not fast enough. I let her get farther ahead, making sure that she could actually walk without my assistance. She struggled, quite a bit.

She slowed down, limping more, making her pain more noticeable. I smirked at her once she fell down to her knees. I rolled my eyes and caught up to her, asking if she finally wanted a piggy-back ride. She looked away and got up, walking away again. She was in even more pain, and it was even more noticeable. She was making me angry, not accepting my request only hurt herself more.

She stopped and sneaked a peak at the open cut on her knee, showing that she was in more pain than I thought. She reached out to touch it, but winced and pulled her hand away. I got in front of her, managing to be unnoticed. Before she stood up, I pulled my backpack around to where I was hanging against my chest. I grabbed her wrists and with all my strength, pulled her onto my back. She winced as I grabbed onto her knees, but it was the only way I could hold her up.

She instantly started rebelling against my actions.

"Put me down Kevin!" She yelled into my ear. She brought up her fist to gently hit my head, but wrapped her arms back around me after almost falling.

"You know, why don't you just accept my kindness?" I asked her, confused. Anne would have done the same thing that Jessie was doing, but she wouldn't deny my request after hurting herself more than once. Jessie, with one arm still wrapped around my neck, slapped my cheek. I winced in pain, but didn't drop her. I ordered her to stay still and stop being a brat, and luckily, that stopped her from hurting me more.

I was able to get us both to school without dropping her once. Luckily she wasn't that heavy, but my back still ached as I let her down at the back gate of school. She stepped on my foot and walked away as quick as she was able too. she turned around and glared at me. Her eyes were ice cold and as she stared, chills were sent up my back. I shivered once and walked into the courtyard, and was approached by Connor.

"Hey, is Anne, you know okay?" Connor asked quietly, "I heard she had to have two surgeries." I honestly did not want Connor to know about anything, in fact I wanted him out of my life. He was just plain annoying, nothing more.

"Who told you that she was at the hospital?" I sternly asked. I was truly curious how word could have gotten out that quick.

"Jessie told me yesterday, in the morning. She saw that you weren't here so she thought I should know," He said, taking a step back. I scared him, good. I turned to the fence that led out of the courtyard and snarled. Now I knew I couldn't tell Jessie anything.

I let go of my anger and other feelings and thought about what Anne would have wanted. I decided that Anne would want Jessie and Connor to know about her condition, so I let it go. The bell rang and I let out a sarcastic and dramatic sigh while entering my classroom. The surrounding kids looked at me and laughed. They probably thought I was a complete weirdo for missing a day of school, everyone in my first period class had perfect attendance. Everyone in the whole school had perfect attendance, except for Anne. But Anne had excuses, I didn't, and now I had to face the obnoxious students, by myself too.
