A New Day, A New Life

I woke up Saturday morning to the smell of bacon and warm chocolate chip pancakes that my father made. I slowly sat next to my mother who was looking at a newspaper with a perplexed face.

"What's wrong?" I asked her, slowly peeking over to sneak a peek at the small print. I was only able to read a few sentences before she caught my attention.

"This child has been missing for a year and they finally found her," my mom said, sighing. I was confused, why had she thought of that as a bad thing? Since I was so confused I asked her.

"Why is that a bad thing?"

"They found her in the garbage can at a near-by store," She said, sighing once more, "And the culprits were the child's parents," she took another pause and then continued, "Why would parents do such a thing."

It scared me and I looked at my mom, "You would never kill me and dispose of my body at a store right?" She chuckled and patted my head softly, telling me not to worry.

My father finally plated the pancakes and placed the two plates down in front of my mom and I. He also took another plate and put them where he was going to eat. We all sat and talked about our dreams and then I said my goodbyes. I was going to go to Kevin's to hang out and study for a test we had on Monday.

I knocked five times on Kevin's door, and waited for about five minutes in the cold. I was about to ring the doorbell when Kevin opened the door with his hair dripping.

"Sorry I was in the shower," He said, letting me in. He shook his head slightly like a dog, revealing his eyes. As he pushed his long bangs out of his face, he also revealed the noticeable pimples on his face. I pretended to pop them and he quickly backed away.

"Don't make fun of me," He said. I giggled and then took a seat on his new couch and sighed.

"Ninth grade is hard," I said. He nodded his head in agreement and then left to get his textbook upstairs. As I was sitting alone I noticed a new picture. It was Kevin's parents in formal clothing sitting next to each other on a bench during fall. I was curious because their wedding picture was right next to it, except they were wearing other clothes in the fall picture. I asked Kevin about it as he sat down.

"I didn't tell you that my mother and father got their vows renewed?" He asked. In order to give him my answer, I shook my head. My hair that was now long slapped my face and I winced. My new bangs got messed up, so I fixed them. He told me that they got their vows renewed a month ago and I told him to pass on my "words of approval." We finally got down to studying for about an hour. After studying we watched Supernatural on Netflix and then studied for another two hours.

Since we were both hungry he offered to take me to get sushi with him. Apparently he got a lot of money from his parents who were gone for a weekend in Italy. He showed me how much and he had gotten 500 dollars. I felt greedy when he told me I could spend only one hundred dollars on myself, but I shook off that feeling as we walked to the sushi place a few blocks away from our neighborhood.

After stuffing our face with sushi, I said goodbye and walked back to my house. Kevin offered to walk me home, but I turned down his offer and told him that I could make it alone. He let me go without objecting to my choice and I arrived safely at my house about 10 minutes later.

I plopped down on my couch and let out a long sigh. I was ready for this math test.
