*Zae's pov*
I jumped into the sky and pulled the wind into my wings. The battle under me still stretched on, the enemy force was down to half its numbers and we had yet to kill anyone. The ground began to take form in different shapes as my youngest brother Mal sent the God Brothers flying cross the large field into the trees. The sound of cracking bones followed shorty after. He had to slow down or we would have death and no sixteen year old boy should have blood on his hands.
He wasn't a normal boy,
The thought came into my head before I could counter it. None of us were normal, I fear that our secret wouldn't remain one much longer.
"Mal ease up, we don't want these people hanging around" He didn't even look at me.
The wind must have been interfering with my voice. I began to move closer to Mal when Azari locked eyes with me and nodded . He heard me and he would relay the message. Azari had grown up a lot over the years. He walked with his chest out now, something I would have never imagined if Alex stayed. He was like a shadow to his elder twin brother. His powers were a force to be reckoned with, if he every lost control I don't know how I would stop him.
That day would never come.
A memory pulled me back into time, when things were easier. Me and my mother were in the kitchen cooking and Shadow was playing with Mal, Alex and Azari outside in the yard. My mother, about to burst, was due to have Scarlet any day.
Normally she brought so much life to the kitchen , singing and dancing while she added the ingredients to what ever she was preparing for us that day. But on hat day the only sound that escaped the kitchen was the scrape of her feet on the floor, and the slow bubbling of the water as it boiled. When she dropped the rice into the kettle of water she turned to me.
"Zae, do you know why you have wings?" she stared hard into my face. I shyly looked down at my feet and began to twirl my fingers.
"Because you are part Angel. " she continued. That was the answer that I always told myself, even though my nightmares at night told me there was much more."That is half the truth. Zae, my beautiful boy. You and your siblings are special and there are a lot of people who want what you have. There will come a time when you have to make a choice whether to embrace your nature or to run from it. I'll leave you to make that choice. One day one of your' siblings might lose control over their powers. I put into your hands the responsibility to either put them out of the pain that is surely to follow or to help them tame the beast inside of them."
I watched tears fall from my mothers eyes, causing me to cry with her.
Had she known the burden she placed on me?
"I will handle it Mother, don't you worry."An arrow whistled past my head pulling me from my flash back. It was about time to finish this.
"Zae!!!!!" My younger sister yelled, her hands covered in someone's blood. It wasn't Shadow that caused that look of terror that spred across her face. In Shadow's arms my youngest brother laid limply. I raced through the air, and dropped beside Shadow and Mal. A single arrow protruded from his stomach. My throat squeezed as I reached to touch my brother.
He was still aliveI reached to take Mal from Shadow, when a blood curdling laugh echoed through the battle field. Azari was standing about seven feet behind Mal., head angled at the sky as he laughed. A small vortex of dark energy and electricity swirled around him.
Oh no.
"Oh, don't be scared now, you had no problem taking the life of my brother now did you." Azari's voice was laced with pure hate. A God Brother charged Azari before he stopped moving. Within an instant, Azari was standing behind the man, blood trickling from his fingertips.
Everyone watched as the man's head rolled off of his shoulders, and hit the ground with a thud.
This is what my mother was talking about, the beast.
I had to make my decision now. What could be the pain that would follow? I had to stop Azari, I had to stop my own brother.
"I didn't mean to do that, I swear." Azari said picking the man's head up from his feet. Frowning his face up, and he dropped it back to the ground.
"An ugly fella, wasn't he?"
A God Brother had snuck up behind Azari ,and thrusted his sword into his back. The sound of metal striking metal rang out across the field. The sword fell to the ground crumbled. Azari looked over his shoulder at the man and smiled.
"You should have thought before you did that man." Azari's hand raised into the air and a bolt of lightening fell from the sky, leaving a pile of ashes were the man stood. I stood frozen in place.
This beast was not my brother.
"Azari get a hold of yourself." I found my voice and my strength with it. I began to approach my brother, and watching for any sudden movements.
"Ahhh, Zae." The monster looked me in my face and smiled. Its eyes were a deep maroon and I knew that my brother was gone.
This wasn't Azari.
"I'll be with you in a minute." Azari said before returning his attention to the God brothers. Throwing both hands in the air summoned lighting from the heavens. The Godbrothers didn't even get the chance to beg for mercy, before he incinerated every single one.
"Now that's better." Azari said returning his attention to me. Pulling on my powers, a created a small funnel of wind. "Stop where you are Azari." I said increasing the size of the wind cyclone. If Azari heard me, he didn't show it.
He was forcing my hand.
Releasing my attack, it struck my baby brother in the middle of his chest. He continued his advance like he felt nothing.
"Zae, if I wanted to kill you, it would have been done by now." He pulled his face into a sick smile. I increased my wind speed and began to advance on him. He would not get anywhere near the rest of us.
"Shadow, can you teleport them somewhere and help me handle this?" I called.
Azari stopped moving, and placed his hands behind his back. He looked so much like Alex standing there, a sick feeling filled me as I realized I had lost another sibling.
Not yet.
"Yes" Shadow's voice was firm behind me.
"You're really making this difficult you know." Azari said tilting his head slightly. The air went cold behind me, and I knew Shadow was using his power to phase somewhere else.
"Have it your way then." Azari said dropping his hands down to his side, and disappeared. I turned around to see Azari snatching Mal from Shadow. My youngest sister screamed, as I sprint across the field, but it was to late.Azari took hold of the arrow sticking from Mal's stomach, and pulled it free. I watched in horror as the arrow descended to the ground, Scarlet dropped to the ground and stared at Azari in horror.
"What have you done?!" I howled, now within striking range, I plunged a fist into Azari face. He didn't even flinch, but he would. I pulled another fist back and hit him again. The temperature of the air dropped again as Shadow appeared behind him, kicking him dead across his face. Azari pulled Mal into a tight hug and began walking. Our hits had no effect on him, standing in the face of one man, me and my brother were powerless. A slow rage began to burn in my stomach. He would not get away with killing Mal.
He wouldn't.
"You, - you monster. I will end you." I charged again, this time pulling the wind into tight balls around my fist. The punches were working this time, Azari's body reacting after each one. Yelling, I continued my barrage of attacks.
"THATS ENOUGH!" Lighting shot out from Azari's body sending me flying back. My wings caught the breeze, and I soared into the air. Azari turned on me, Jamal still cradled tight in his arms.
"You're going to land now." My body reacted on its own, I dropped to the ground like a stone. I attempted charge forward, but my feet stopped after one step.
"Now, now, slow your roll Zae." Azari began to approached, his aura still kicking violently around him. His powers were on a completely different level than my own. Pausing in front of me, he smiled causing goosebumps to cover my body.
I was powerless.
Squatting down, Azari placed Mal at my feet.
"You killed him!" Scarlet's voice echoed from the rear. Azari raised his head to her and smiled.
"Mal is half demon, a single arrow wouldn't kill him. He's just sleeping it off." The wind was knocked clean out of me. I opened my mouth to deny what he was saying, when I noticed the hole in Mal's stomach had closed up.
"Mal isn't half demon Scarlet, don't listen to him." My voice was weak, defeat was evident in my tone.
"Scarlet and Shadow, your' fathers are demons too" A slow smile spread across Azari's face as he locked eyes with me. A message passed between us, and I knew he knew what I was, that I was different.
"Azari's body isn't ready to contain me for this long, so maybe I'll see you around ,maybe not." The dark Azari laughed as he collapsed to the ground. Shadow was already at his side before he hit the ground, with a blade pushed to his throat.
"No Shadow." My voice was back and steady.
The first rain drop hit my face, followed by an army of its kind. Lighting and thunder boomed in the sky overhead as I dropped down beside Azari.
Had I done the right thing letting him live? Let's hope so.
"Shadow, grab Mal and bring him to the tents, we'll talk about this tomorrow when Mal and Azari are moving around." Shadow nodded and turned to get Mal, Scarlet was squatted beside him searching his stomach for the wound that was no longer there. She looked up at me and back down at Mal, and I watched as something clicked in her eyes. Raising to her feet, she headed in the direction of her tent.
"Scarlet, wait." She looked over her shoulder and gave me a look I hadn't seen since the day my mother died. A single tear sled down her face, she quickly wiped it away. I opened my mouth again to reach out to her, but right now wasn't the time.
Reaching down and I pulled Azari on my shoulders. This was all Alex's fault, is what my mind told me, but I knew that was a lie. This was destiny and how it was supposed to be. My days with my siblings were numbered. A single tear fell down my cheek that was washed away with the rain. Life as we knew it had changed forever.
