The fire imp sliced through the air trying with little success to cut my throat out. The newly found stranger was holding her own with the fire imps, the imps raining fire down on top of her head.
"You know you can use those flashy powers of yours to dispose of these things." She  called, never looking in my direction. That is when I noticed I had yet to pull on my powers in this fight. Looking deep within myself pulled on the power resting in my gut. Taking aim with my left hand at the imp I formed a ball of lightning into my hand. The image of my hand curled around the head of a godbrother, sprang forth into my memory, caused the attack to disappear.
Fuck.
The imp saw me hesitation and took its chance to attack, although my powers weren't working at the moment, my years of training hadn't. Sidestepping the imp, I  jumped onto its back. Shrieking as it ascend back into the sky it clawed at me, doing everything in its power to tear me from its back. Pulling my hands over my head, I brought them down together behind the monster's neck. The wings stopped moving as the ground started getting closer and closer. Before things got ugly, I jumped from the imps back and landed very gracefully beside the beautiful woman known as Xandra.
"That wasn't exactly what I was expected, but it gets the job done I guess. Can you do that three more times?"
"I could try?" I found myself smiling in the mist of the battle.
"Don't worry about it Sparky." Xandra dropped her hands to her side and the temperature dropped again. Frost spread out from her feet towards the river. Once it hit the shore the river froze instantly. The fire imps saw this show and took the chance to attack, with a blood coiling shriek they all closed in on us. Xandra's eyes were still firmly closed, and my powers still weren't working. I pulled Xandra into my arms in the hope that I could protect her from the imps.
I found myself flying through the air,  before landing firmly on my back. The scream of the imps had halted, replaced by the sound of the flow of the river.
"I didn't exactly say you could touch me, did I?" Xandra stood in the same spot looking down at me laying on the ground. I rose to my feet and stared at the three imps who were encased in a frosty armor.
"That's an amazing power you got there." I noticed the ground was no longer frozen at her feet, the river back flowing normally.
"Thanks, now help me dispose of those if you don't mind." She picked up a loose branch from the ground and approached the frozen foe. My body moved without my permission, blocking her from the imps.
"What are you doing?" She asked stopping and she staring at me.
"They aren't fighting back, we can't kill them." I had no clue where this was coming from but I knew I meant it.
"What is your name?" She dropped the branch and rose her chin at me. I didn't know if this was a challenge or if she was just curious, but I raised my chin also and spoke.
"I'm Azari Kendra." She dropped her chin and smiled. I saw how quick she was and wasn't going to let my guard down.
"Don't be so cautious if you don't want me to hurt the imps I won't, but we should probably move before they unthaw." She turned around and began to walking towards the river. Grabbing my shoes she tossed them in my direction.
"Thanks." I mustered, still watching the women in awe.
"Are you just going to keep staring at me with that dumb look or follow me? I have food up the way." She didn't wait for me answer, which didn't surprise me.
Before I followed behind the mysterious women, I looked at the imps who were but a few moments ago, determined to kill me.
Their entire bodies were covered in ice. The flames that radiated from them were put to rest by the frosty shell. The ice wore snug to the bodies of the imps exposing  they were women after all, under all that fire. I took in the body of the imp and a lump formed in my throat.
They are demons just like you Azari, never forget that.
Before I turned my back on the imp I apologized for killing one of their sisters. The eyes of the imp nearest to me snapped opened. Normal eyes not like the ones they showed just minutes ago. Something else shocked me; tears flowed from them. Taking a step towards the demon, I whipped the tear from its face. Its eyes locked with mine and a whole conversation passed with no words. What I took away most from the conversation was a statement that I would never believe.
It's our way, I looked at the imp one more time before I jogged to catch up to Xandra.
