"Je vais vous rendre vos examens," said Mme War.

It means "I will give you back your tests" in French.

"Sadly, only one of you got 100 percent on their test," she continued as she started handing out our papers.

I crossed my fingers, hoping to get above a 90 percent. And I crossed my toes, hoping to be the one to have 100 percent.

Mme War handed me my paper. I looked at it.

100%

Yes! I thought.

Right then, the bell rung. I gathered my things, and left the classroom.

"Hey, guys," Oliver told the class as soon as we were all in the hall. "Who got the 100?"
"Me," I replied.

He frowned and muttered, "Smart ass."

My cheeks reddened and I looked at the floor. He was such a jerk.
