"Hey, Rose," says Naomi.

Naomi is a girl from school, and she is Jewish. I'm missing school for Rosh Hashanah and I'm at the synagogue (the Jewish temple) right now. I don't pray much, but my parents do. I read a book, right now I'm reading "The Fault in our Stars". It's really good. Anyways, since the synagogue is next to school, a lot of my Jewish classmates are here.

"Hey Naomi," I reply, before going back to my book.

But I can't concentrate on reading. All I can think about is, I wish Oliver was Jewish.

If he was, he'd be here. And, more importantly, I'd be able to date him. I'm only allowed to date Jewish people, not that I'm allowed to date at all. I guess I could bend the rules a little bit, but it would still be so much simpler if he was Jewish.
Anyways, he might not even be interested in me at all, so all this thinking is useless. But I like dreaming about dating a guy even though I know it will never happen.

My parents won't let me date, not that a guy's ever asked me, or be alone with a guy, not that a guy's ever wanted to... But maybe they'll make an exception for Oliver!
