Chapter 19: No Capes, No Goggles
"I needed to fitted for a costume." Kenny said, just as he walked in on Friday.
I corrected him. "It's a suit."
Rory came up in her wheely chair with a tape measure. "I'll need measurements so it isn't too big."
"Or to small." Kenny said winking at Rory.
There was a knock on the door. "I guess. Toby, someone is at the door." Rory said, her face was red from Kenny's comment.
"Get in your bedroom. We can't have people seeing what we are doing." I made my way to the door and opened it. "Hello?"
"Hey Tobias." It was Faye.
I smiled. "Faye! What's up? How are you?" I asked, taking in her beauty. Today her hair was in a messy bun that would make anyone jealous.
She smiled, looking towards the ground. "I'm good. You?"
"I'm pretty good. Do you want to come in?" I said trying to usher her in.
"Well, I can't stay for long. I have to get to an interview for the newspaper. It's some big thing." Faye said looking disappointed.
"Oh, I see. Well good luck getting there and writing the story." I said, starting to close the door.
She stopped the door from moving. 'Sorry. I didn't come over here just to tell you my plans, I have something for you." She said digging into her pocket.
"What?" I asked, taking a moment to take in her beauty.
She pulled a paper out of her pocket. "A letter." She said extending the envelope to me.
I raised my eyebrow."A letter?" I took the envelope from Faye. Our hands touched, just for a second.
"Yeah, it got placed in my mailbox by mistake. My grandma tried to open it, thinking it was hers." Faye said, letting out a small laugh.
"Oh, thanks!" I glanced at the envelope, placing it on the table right by the door.
"No problem. Is there was reason why your living room looks like it was hit by a tornado?" Faye asked, looking past me.
I turned. "My living room?" The makeshift ring. Think of a lie! "Oh, um... yes. Jeb wanted to fight me to the death. So I moved the furniture around so there could be a pit." That is a nice cover up Tobias, good job!
"That sounds like a gladiator fight." Faye giggled.
Jeb ran across the room. "I love gladiators!"
"Yes he does." I said, hoping Jeb's shouts didn't echo throughout the whole building.
"So did you win?" Faye asked raising an eyebrow.
"No I didn't. Jeb did give me a chance, you know make it a fair fight." I said, the lie rolling off my tongue.
"Are the black eyes from the fight?" Faye pointed to my face.
"Black eyes?" I thought about what she meant. Then I realized it was from Kenny. "Oh. I don't know where those are from." I said,
Rose clung to one of my legs. "You look like a raccoon." She said looking up at me.
Faye nodded. "I was just about to say that. Although it also looks like he has goggles on right now." She said.
Goggles... let's hope she doesn't put two and two together."Yeah, that what I was going for. All I need it a tail and then I will be good."
That made Faye snort. She covered her mouth. "I would love to see that." She said, her cheeks turning red.
"I bet you would." I said, giving her a small wink.
Her face turned red, after just regaining her composer. "Well I have to leave, you know, that conference thing that I am doing. So I will see you later." She slowly made her way back, continuing to wave at me.
"See ya! Have fun with the interview." I waved at her.
"I will." She waved one last time and made her way down the stairs.
"Sounds like someone is in love." Kenny said sticking his head out of Rory's room.
Rory walked out, rolling her eyes. "You don't know the half of it."
"And you still need to work on the suit." I said, trying to get my love life not to be the subject of the conversation.
"What do you think I'm doing?" Rory retorted, holding up sew stuff.
"So I was thinking about having a cape. How does that sound?" Kenny asked standing in a super hero pose.
"No capes." Rory said, continuing to sew the suit.
"Why not?" Kenny asked, looking over at Rory.
"Because they get caught on things. Anyway you will look like a dork. More than you already do." She said, not even looking up.
"But-" Kenny tried to make an argument.
"Do you want to be his sidekick?" Rory said looking at Kenny.
"Partner." Kenny corrected her.
She squinted her eyes. "You're pushing your luck."
Kenny threw his hands in the air. "Fine. No cape."
"Rory, you can't control who is and is not my sidekick." I said, turning around to look at her.
Rory glared at me. "I can and I will. I can easily dismantle your suit."
"I'm sorry." I said, turning around.
"It's actually partner." Kenny said.
"Whatever." I said, rolling my eyes.
"So what do you think?" Rory said, having Kenny walk in front of me.
I looked at Kenny's suit. It was similar to mine, the colors were different. But he was missing something that I had. "Why doesn't he have goggles?" I asked pointing at some sort of bandana hood thing.
Rory rolled her eyes. "You guys can be an exact copy of each other. That would look stupid. And anyway, He has a scar on his forehead that he can't have shown." Rory said lifting up the bandana, showing a small, but noticeable scar right above his nose.
"I am so glad that this isn't spandex. That would be awkward." Kenny said moving around in the suit.
"I would never work with someone who wore spandex." I said thinking of myself in spandex... no... I can't do that. Bad pictures in my mind.
