"You waiting for someone, darling?"
Looking up, I see a man (in his twenties possibly) clearing up the tables that have been left. I've noticed him a couple of times, taking people's orders and chatting to the customers.
I smile, "Yeah. Or so I thought,"
I've ruined everything. I don't know why I thought this was a good idea. Why did I think they would actually come?
"Nah, a pretty girl like you? I'm sure there's just a misunderstanding," says the man, trying to make me feel better.
"Could I just stay a little longer?" I ask, before he nods and finishes his job.
The closing time is 5:30pm and most people have already come and gone. There's just me and a mum and daughter sitting towards the window, laughing.
Michael told me he'd be here at Range Park at 3o'clock. Range Park is a large park in my old town, not far away from where I live now. It's a giant green with all sorts of shops and play areas, a black wired gate outlining it.
When I first arrived, at 2o'clock, I stood around the entrance for more than an hour, my hands sweating with nerves and excitment.
But after a while when no one showed up, I was still stupid enough to think they were inside the park, so I wandered around for a couple more hours until I found this coffee shop. I've been here ever since.
The man walks out to the back with the dirty cups and plates he retrieved from some empty tables and returns minutes later with a steaming cup of hot chocolate, overflowing with whipped cream.
He heads straight to me and places it directly in front of me.
"Oh, um, I didn't order this," I say, awkwardly.
"I know," he smiles, "It's on the house,"
I wrap my hands around the warm cup and breathe in the chocolately smell, sickening but sweet.
"You didn't have to," I shake my head, "But thanks,"
"No one gets stood up without a free cup of the best hot chocolate," he says, before heading back to the counter.
I'm grateful, but I wish he would stop talking about me getting stood up, although I did. It hurts to actually hear it coming from someone besides myself.
I still can't believe I was so naive to come here. Of course they wouldn't be here. Of course they have better things to do like party with celebrities. I'm nothing to him now. Simply just an old friend.
However, there's still some hope in the back of my mind. Something that's telling me he's been here, but I know that's silly. Why would he come and walk out?
"Hey!" I call to the man who's name I still don't know.
He has no nametag.
His head flicks up towards the sound of my voice and he makes his way over again.
"Everything okay?" he asks, concerened as he leans on my table with his hands.
"Did you, by any chance, have some, um - popular? - customers come by today?" I ask, hopeful.
His facial expression gives it away.
"He stood you up?"
"He came? When was he here? Did he leave?" I ask, hurridly.
"Well, he came by almost an hour before you did. Two of them, actually. One of them with horrid green hair-"
"Michael!"
I feel so happy I could cry! They came! I wasn't stood up!
But why am I still here and they aren't? Or are they? I need to find out!
"What were they talking about? Where did they go afterwards?"
My hands are shaking underneath the table and I'm waiting for his next answer so I can jump up and find them.
"I couldn't hear them perfectly, but from what I did hear, they were talking about a girl, Alex, who I now assume is you. The green-haired one was a bit more calm, whereas the other one was almost as shakey as you are right now," he pauses, "I'm not sure where they went but they left just a while ago, I'm sure you could still catch them,"
He stands back as I quickly detatch myself from the chair, knocking over the cup of hot chocolate as I do.
"I have to find them!!" I say before hurrying out of the coffee shop as fast as I can.
