Chapter 25
I take a bite at the old, stale, dusty hay. Crisp has not been feeling well lately and I'm worried. And Misty has been in a deep depression, from being split up with Juno. Every once in a while, you can hear the poor foals squealing for their mothers. We got put in a corral with some other mares, including one gray mare who just gave birth to a pretty white filly. She tries to hide the little, snowy foal behind her, but sadly, she gets taken away to the barn.
Older foals all stay outside near us. The sun gets consumed by a grey cloud overhead and some horses are getting restless. One black stallion rises up on his hind legs and sends out a threatening neigh. Wildfire returns it and rears up as well. Men race up to them and try to stop the two. The bad thing is that their corrals are side by side. The black stallion pins his ears and almost screams at Wildfire.
Wildfire doesn't give up easily, so he returns the screech, nipping the stallion on the shoulder. A brave man, but obviously not thinking, runs into the black stallions corral and trying to separate the two. But instead, the stallion comes crashing down on the mans leg. Leaving it in a very odd position. He screams in pain, spooking the stallion to the other side. A woman pulls him out and puts in her truck, soon speeding away. Wildfire snorts at the stallion and walks away.
-------------
Some hours later, they start bringing out halters. All colours and sizes. From newborn foals, to 19 hand adult horses. Someone enters the corral and walks up to a palomino mare. Misty. She shies away, fearfully. I trot to her and let her know that they wouldn't hurt us. She cautiously accepts the black halter and is led out. She starts to speed up when they lead her to a specific stall and is put in it. A high whinny echoes from the stall. I'm guessing that it is Juno or Jassy. Someone approaches me and thinks that he can halter me? I pin my ears and rear up. He backs away and halters another mare, leading her into another barn. I drink some gross water and turn to see that Wildfire is getting led into a barn! I panic, neighing out to him.He snaps out of some trance and breaks loose of the persons grip, galloping over. He shouts to two other men and they almost trip over their own feet trying to grab Wildfire. He nuzzles me and nickers.
" Willow! you have to get out of here! Get the others to safety and don't get me I will be fine as long as your safe. I-" his face is blue and black due to bruises, his neck, scratched with thin cuts. Before I can say anything, he gets torn from the fence and they stick a needle into his neck. Not even thirty seconds later, he is groggily following them. What did they do to him!? One by one, each mare and stallion get led out by people. Pretty soon, a bay mare and myself are left. One last woman enters the corral, switching glances between us. The mare seems pretty nervous when led out.
Yeah, that's right. She left me. I don't want to be haltered but I want to find Jassy or Wildfire or Crisp. They throw a flake of hay in the corral and snatch my water bucket, oddly quickly, and return it with clear and fresh water. Voices approach with hoofbeats. The man who was leading Wildfire, was now leading History. He pricks his ears forward, eagerly. I try my best to ignore him, but the man lets him stop on the other side of the fence.
" Hey. So, how is captivity treating you? Interested in it?" he gleams under the moonlight.
" Do you think I like being trapped? And what is there to be interested in? Plus, why am I speaking to the same stallion that led us all to this horrid place?" I snap at him.
" I told you! They would've hurt any of us, including Jass or your stallion, Wildfire."
" Stop! You probably don't even know what happened to them," I almost scream at him, " Wildfire looks as though he was beaten and I don't even know what happened to my Jassy!" he starts to back away.
" Sorry, but I don't. Now you may not see me in a few days because they are making me find another herd. Don't worry, it only has mares." and with that, the man leads him into the place we came. He unclips his halter and History starts galloping out. As I watch him gallop away, I stamp my hooves, frustrated.
Now, all humans are gone and I'm guessing that most, calm, horses are sleeping. I quietly walk over to the gate and try unlocking the lock with my upper lip. The cold metal stings my lip, but I have to get out. The lock clicks open. Yes! I carefully push it open and trot out. I ask myself; 'Should I get Wildfire first or the others?' I turn my whole body towards the barn Wildfire went. I lope up and enter the dark barn. Through the darkness, I can spot several stalls. I quietly approach one stall, but only a strawberry roan stallion sleeps. I walk to the next one and find a red dun. Another one has a smoky black stallion with a large blaze, I walk to one on the other side and it holds a seal brown stallion who is sleeping soundly. I remember that there were two barns, not one. As I approach the last one, I start to worry that I will have to search all over the place. I look into the stall and spot a chestnut stallion, hiding in the corner. Wildfire!
I unlock the stall and nuzzle him awake. He jumps the slightest bit. Well, who would like waking up to some horse nuzzling you when you are asleep? He sighs and nuzzles back.
" Willow, I thought you would've gone with the others by now. Hey, why didn't you listen to me!" He whispers.
" No. I couldn't leave you behind! And because I cant leave you here, I mean, look at what they did to you." We start to walk out of the barn. But I stop, he looks at me.
" We have to free all horses. I can not leave and let all these foals, mares and stallions to go to horrid places and split up with their herds." he nods.
" I understand. I will get the mares, you cover the stallions and who ever gets to the foals, fillys and colt. And please, don't get caught." He nuzzles me and lopes off to the barn with the mares. I return to the barn I got Wildfire from and wake up all the stallions.
-------------
After about half an hour after freeing about thirty stallions, we meet up with Wildfire at the foals corral. He is almost is finished emptying out the corral. Mares, stallions and foals reunite with each other. Three groups of horses stand alone. One full of mares, one full of stallions and one small one of foals. I walk over to the few foals who are standing there, nervously." Hey guys," they all shy behind each other, " I'm not going to hurt you. Do any of you have a herd?" they all stay quiet, except one little, white filly.
" None of us have a herd or cant find our dams or sires."
" Wait, aren't you that gray mare's foal. I know where she is." she happily follows me and as soon as the mare sees her foal, she lopes over. She thanks me before I return to the other three foals with three mares.
" You, little black one with the star. Here, this is Sapphire, can she take care of you?" he nods and trots over to her and thanks me.
" The little buckskin, here is Lilly. Can she take care of you?" he rears up and trots over to the leopard mare.
" And you, this is Esmerelda. Can she take care of you?" the little brown and white filly walks over to her and thanks me for finding her a mare. I remind everyone that we are leaving and to follow Wildfire and I. We start at a slow lope and gradually, make our way to a gallop. We did it. We are free of humans.
