Sheila had been neighbors with Caboose for about ten years now. Even though their intellect and intentions were complete opposites of one another, they still have very much in common.
Wake up at 8:30 sharp and get the mail?
It always ends with a friendly wave to each other.
Walk the dogs every other day?
They were pals as well as their dogs.
The list seems ironic, especially since I could go on about their similar lifestyles, but the whole point was that even if Caboose was a little... Smarter, their lives would still be the same.
The usual 'Destiny' cliche was a bit too accurate for these two.
The thing was, Caboose was like a polite and spontaneous child. Almost everyday once Sheila got home from the grocery store, he would see her struggling to carry all the bags at once, and would instantly offer his own assistance.
After this routine started once they moved in the lot, they became inseparable friends.
And of course, this friendship became even more when Sheila finally stayed home for once during the December holidays. Sheila usually went to visit friends or work, but Caboose was a little excited to have someone other than his dogs during his favorite time of year.
So, Caboose politely knocked on her door and invited her to dinner, to which she smiled and accepted. In Caboose's head, everything was going better than expected.
I can finally cook for someone this year! He repeated in his head as he walked home, a smile planted on his face.
But then he stopped.
I can't cook, he remembered, the smile wiped from his face.
Oh well, can't be too hard, can it?
Wrong.

After picking out the best gifts possible for Caboose, Sheila was more than excited to head over to his house to celebrate the holidays. Making her way through the snow, she looked up at the house, seeing poorly set up decorations, but she could see the potential behind them.
Skipping steps as she approached the door, a pungent odor seeped out from under the door.
Oh no...
Sheila opened the door, peering inside as worry began to boil.
"Caboose...?"
"Uh... Um... I may or may not have burned... Well, everything."
Sheila shut the door behind her and quickly made way to the kitchen, to see a charcoal-covered chicken that clearly could've been put to better use.
As Sheila looked up to tell Caboose that everything was okay, she saw that he was near tears, staring gloomily at the burnt meat.
"L-Look, it's fine! We can just order pizza or something. In my opinion, pizza is the best holiday dinner." She said with a smile, patting his back as she picked up the phone to ask for a delivery.
~~~~~
Once the pizza arrived, the two sat in the couch watching Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, drinking soda and snuggled with layers of blankets.
It's not every day that you get the opportunity to be formal and go on nice dates, but in this moment, Sheila realized it was quite the opposite.
Sheila's main problem was that she couldn't ever relax. Caboose's problem was that he relaxed too much.
Two complete opposite people, brought together by destiny...
Or a overlooked chicken.
