Chapter 19 : When the tides turn

Akame opened her eyes slowly... After hours of darkness. She opened her eyes slightly. She saw the face of the most gorgeous man ever...well at least according to her it was.

Platinum blonde hair, pale white skin, a chiselled face, so perfect that he seemed to be a sculpture. There was a scar that ran across one eye...but it did nothing to reduce his charm...if fact accentuated his wild looks.

Kakashi-sensei was drinking a cup of sake...in the morning. He had a calm look on his face and Akame noticed that he was looking with a blank expression at the K.I.A stone which was visible from the hospital room.

She could swear that she saw a drop of tear slide down his face.

It was that moment that she felt closest to Kakashi-sensei.

"Good morning, sensei"

Kakashi pulled the mask on his face in a hurry and tried to run away but Akame had hugged him from behind. She was still weak and Kakashi gave a soft chuckle as he saw her slump in his arms.

Akame pouted slightly as she sat back on her bed. She patiently ate her breakfast.

Akame: So Kakashi-sensei...what happened during the invasion?

Kakashi: Quite a lot of Konoha nins were injured by the giant snakes but there was only one casualty... a huge one... Sandaime, Sarutobi Hiruzen-sama.

Akame had a blank look on her face.

Akame: So why is sensei here right now?

Kakashi: Can't a sensei visit his hospitalized student?

Akame looked at him with a pouted glance until he finally gave in.

Kakashi: I have...made a lot of mistakes in the past. Mistakes that I could have prevented... So when I saw you in the cave-

Akame: So it wasn't my imagination... I did meet Tobi-san...

Kakashi: Tobi? I remember you murmuring about him when you were delirious. So he was the who took you to the cave?

Akame nodded and Kakashi smiled. He mentally vowed to thank this tobi person if he met him.

Akame: So sensei...is something bothering you?

Kakashi has spent quite a bit of time with his students and he could say proudly that he could understand even Sasuke's feelings...even though the latter did nothing but say 'hn' all the time.

Akame was not the type to show her expressions like Naruto and Sakura but she wasn't silent like Sasuke.

Right now, Akame was actually in a good mood.

Kakashi: Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke and I...all of us wanted to apologize to you. We were not there when you needed us.

Akame: That's all right. I prefer to go solo during assassination missions. It is understandable that they got scared of me. I have even worse sides to me... I am a monster and yet I don't have the power to protect the ones I want to. Sometimes I end up bringing death upon them with my own hands....

Kakashi: Do you mean about Tatsumi, Kurome and the members of the night raid?

Akame slightly nodded. Kakashi had often heard about the night raid...especially about Tatsumi and Kurome. He might not know who they are but Akame often had nightmares about them. He found out during their mission in the land of waves.

Akame: Tatsumi was a fellow member of the night raid and...Kurome is my own sister. I almost ended up killing her! Even with this power... I cannot save those who I wish to save. I couldn't save Hokage-sama...and he trusted me so much!

Akame had finally broken down crying. How long had she been suppressing all these feelings? Kakashi remembered that Akame had said during the survival test that someone like her is not worthy of having a comrade.

He hugged his student as she cried on his chest.

Kakashi: Let me tell you this from my side. You are not the only one. I have killed and let my comrades die too...

Kakashi noticed that Akame didn't flinch when he talked about killing his comrades.

Kakashi: I was in a team with a hyperactive ninja called Obito and a kind medical ninja called Rin. During the third great shinobi war I had been promoted to the status of a jonin...but during the mission of the Kannagi bridge I lost Obito. To save me, he pushed me away...and got crushed by the boulders. The sharingan I have is my last gift from him. When Rin was captured by the enemy to make her their Jinchuriki, I went to save her...but she killed herself on my chidori enforced hand. That was not the end of it... My sensei, Namikaze Minato had become the fourth Hokage but he died during the nine-tails attack but I couldn't do anything to assist him. I couldn't do anything to help him.

He was surprised to find that all the misery he had kept inside him... It was so easy to confess his worries to Akame. She never behaved like a kid. In fact he was slightly worried because her behavior was exactly like Itachi's before he deflected from the village.

Akame: I see. So that's why you were looking at the K.I.A stone. Don't worry sensei... I won't let myself die...if it will hurt you.

Kakashi hugged her. Kakashi had noticed that Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke had been eavesdropping on the conversation. Akame had fallen asleep on Kakashi's lap and he decided not to move and wake her up.

Naruto and Sakura decided that Akame was not a monster and that they would ask for forgiveness. They would become comrades with her so that she could realize that she was a good person and that she deserved to have comrades.

Sasuke's thought process was going on in a completely different direction. Akame had almost killed her sister to fulfil her goal. She was a worthy assassin. She was worthy of joining his team. He would have her distract others who come in his way so that he could solely focus on killing Itachi.

Akame fell into a deep, peaceful sleep for the first time in a long while. But there were nightmares waiting to begin when she would open her eyes next...
