Chapter 43 : Reflections and Resolutions

Akame P.O.V

Zetsu: Deidara is dead. He ended it with a huge explosion.

Kisame: Oh my! It seems like we lost another member eh? I thought he was pretty strong...so who killed him off? The Kyuubi jinchuriki or Uchiha Sasuke?

Zetsu: It was Sasuke. However...It looks like Sasuke died as well.

I quietly looked ahead of me. Standing in front of me were Pain and Konan of the Akatsuki. They listened quietly to the talk between the members. But what surprised me was that Obito hadn't told anyone that Sasuke was alive. Was he covering for Sasuke? But...why?

Kisame: Dragged him along eh?

Zetsu: You should be grateful Itachi. Deidara died while preventing any unnecessary hindrances.

Unnecessary hindrance? Was Sasuke's presence a hindrance for the Akatsuki? Why though? If Sasuke was a hindrance then why did Obito save his life? I sat quietly in the corner. Pain and Konan were the only ones in the room. Other members were just holographic images and they couldn't see me.

But the question remained...why bring me to the Akatsuki now?

Zetsu: Tobi is dead as well. Deidara decided to blow everything up indiscriminately.

Kisame: Yeah...his name was Tobi, was it? I thought his type excelled in escaping. Deidara's jutsu must have been something if that guy couldn't escape.

Wait...they think Obito is dead? What on earth is going on? I thought I was going to be Obito's partner in the Akatsuki!

Kisame: But it's a pity we lost them.

Pain: That doesn't matter. Losing Deidara was heavier. We can find plenty of people of Tobi's level.

Was Pain trying to hide Obito's existence? Surely he should know how powerful Obito is if he is the leader of the Akatsuki plus there was no mentioning Madara's name. What was going on? Looks like all I can do right now is listen to their discussion and ask Obito to fill the gaps.

Pain: Mourn Tobi and Deidara's death in silence at least. That is all.

With that Pain cut the connection and the holograms disappeared. I sat on the edge of the window. The rain poured down intensely. Judging by the weather, we must be in Amegakure right now. A few hundred yards away, Uchiha Itachi stood in the rain.

He made no effort to block his face from the rain. His partner Kisame had a wry smile on his face. I viewed them in curiosity. The man that Sasuke was trying so hard to kill...

Kisame: What happened to your brother truly is a shame. Now you've become the last of the Uchiha clan.

Itachi looked at the sky as he shook his head. For a moment his face looked so vulnerable that I had no idea what to make of it. He didn't look like he was trying to use the rain to hide his tears.

Itachi: No. He didn't die. 

Itachi was right. Uchiha Itachi wasn't present during the fight. Then how was he so sure that Sasuke was safe? Was it the level of trust he had in his brother? If it was...then I wonder if he is the same as me. I had to defeat,nearly kill, Kurome for the sake of justice. Was there any benefit for the world or Sasuke due to Itachi's actions? 

Tsk...no point in overthinking stuff. As an assassin my duty is to aid Sasuke in his revenge. I should leave it to Sasuke to make up his mind regarding what he intends to do. 

Just when I was about to walk in, Pain came and sat beside me but...it was as if I wasn't even there. Konan stood behind him and gave me a small smile, acknowledging my presence. She looked like she wanted to savor this moment of peace with Pain but then her face froze for a moment.

Konan: Pain...come inside. He is here.

Pain gave me a look that said 'follow me'. I did accept Madara's deal. I serve as a member of the Akatsuki in exchange for information about who is after Sasuke and the Uchihas. What I didn't expect was Sasuke asking me to leave for the Akatsuki alone.

Pain: So how is Sasuke?

Obito: He's progressing nicely. He's able to use the full power of the Sharingan. His eyes will surpass Itachi's. The time is drawing near. He has to decide soon. There isn't much time left after all...

Pain: What about the Kyuubi jinchuriki?

Obito: You'll take on the mission of capturing the Kyuubi. As the leader of Akatsuki, failure will not be tolerated from you.

Konan: That is all right after all...Pain has never failed a mission.

Obito: We are done with our talks here. Akame, come with me.

 All of a sudden Obito pulled me towards him and teleported us from there. At that moment I was so lost in thought that I couldn't even ask questions. What does Obito mean by asking Pain to go after the nine tails? 

Here I was torn between my loyalty towards Sasuke and ignoring an obvious death threat.

Obito: Worried about Uzumaki Naruto?

Akame: Of course I am. We were in the same team after all but...

Obito: But reality never turns out how we want it right? I'm sure you have a lot of questions and the perfect person to answer them would be Madara.

So Madara was keeping his identity a secret and Obito was his decoy? All I could figure out from their pattern of attack was that they were after the tailed beasts. 

I was beginning to link the plans they were making. Pain had a different plan for the Akatsuki while Obito and Madara had a completely different objective.  I could figure out Pain's plans from Kabuto's records of spying on Akasuna no Sasori but I had no inkling as to what Madara wished to achieve alongside Obito and the tailed beasts and why he needed the Akatsuki.

Sasuke's behavior has been weird ever since I drank sake...did I do something wrong then? Obito wouldn't be open about his plans either and it would be time until he provides me information regarding those who are after the Uchiha.

Well...entering Akatsuki made my purpose clear. I had two objectives set for myself and...they are both so important that I cannot rank them based on priority...I need to collect information to aid Uchiha Sasuke's revenge. I need to figure out Madara's plan and save Obito and the world.

All I could see was that my life is never going to be the same in this world. First a student, then a tutor and now...an undercover agent of sorts in a criminal organization. Guess assassination is not the only thing expected from an assassin in this world. It's not just Naruto and Sasuke...this world...It was teaching me something too...but what it is trying to teach me is...a question for another time... 

Well in the end, all this adrenaline rush...might not be so bad after all.
