Chapter 39 : Recruiting Uzumaki Karin

Akame P.O.V

Walking on water was a different kind of experience. The lazy clouds reflected upon the surface of the clear water. As we walked on its surface, light ripples formed on its surface. It was a comfortable, warm feeling...with the ocean stretching in all sides for as far as our eyes could see.

Suigetsu: Can I ask you something?

Sasuke: What is it?

Suigetsu: Why are you gathering comrades?

Sasuke: I have a goal in mind. A platoon will be more effective for attaining my goal. From the moment that I approached Orochimaru,I've thought and prepared for the situation for after I've killed him. I intend to recruit shinobi with notable potential.

Suigetsu: But...why must that be Karin? She's way too devoted to Orochimaru. She's messed with my body on a regular basis due to 'Orochimaru's order'. She's miss Jailer. That hideout is her toy box and she plays with them. She has absolute control over them and anyone who tries to rebel against her is immediately found and disposed off. Besides...her personality not one that I'd call 'desirable'.

Sasuke: Well we do have other options if she refuses but I intend to have an Uzumaki on my team and...if I'm the one asking, she'll definitely not refuse.

Akame: That's quite the confidence for someone who ignores her all the time.

Sasuke: It's unavoidable. The farther I keep her away, the better I can trap her. 

Suigetsu: Well if you say that then its unavoidable.

After walking for three days without a break, we finally laid our eyes on a rocky looking small mountain. The eastern hideout of Orochimaru's.

The more a hideout lacks guards, the more suspicious it is. Besides...Karin wasn't the type of girl who messes up on her job. She has an ability to sense our chakras. She must have found out about our arrival a long time ago. So...what was she up to?

But as we walked further into her territory, something became quite apparent. All those lumps on the grounds. They were makeshift graves. So this is how she curbed rebellions.

We cast off that foreboding feeling and approached the heavy steel gate. Suigetsu slashed the gate down with 'his' throat cleaver. What lay inside was a circular tunnel. At regular intervals we found jailed experiments. Unlike the typical ones, they looked more humane. The men sat hunched together simply scratching away at the ground or gambling idly.

"hey, I've a feeling that the rumor is true."

"Which one? The one about Uchiha Sasuke finally killing Orochimaru?"

"D-Don't just sprout nonsense, what if Karin finds out about it?"

The men watched agape as we walked past those bars. They weren't malnourished but they weren't well fed either. Despair had sunk into their eyes and...they seem to regard Sasuke as an illusion.

"Oye...he's really Sasuke right!"

"It's been a long time since he came here with Orochimaru. Why is he here with Akame-san and Suigetsu instead?"

"That's right! Why hasn't Orochimaru come?"

"Sh...let's wait until we get proper news."

Suigetsu: Ah...as expected from Uchiha Sasuke! We actually get seated by the Karin on a couch!

"W-Who said it's because of Sasuke? B-Besides...who said you could sit on the couch.

I see...this is what Suigetsu meant when he said he doesn't get along with Karin. Karin was...kind of pretty and I've never noticed people's outfits but her's stood out due to her toned body. Her arms were completely covered while her legs were bared...a unique combination. It was quite unbelievable... a girl our age was managing a prison.

Despite all this...her personality made it hard for me to even stand beside her. She was boisterous and extremely loud.

Sasuke: Uzumaki Karin. I was you to join team Hebi as the third member.

Karin: Hah? Third member? Aren't I the fourth....no....wait! I never said anything about agreeing to-

Sasuke: Suigetsu and Akame, go and free the prisoners. Without prisoners there is no need for a prison warden.

Suigetsu skipped all the way to the cells. He must be extremely happy to trouble Karin. It's funny really. If he released the prisoners, he'll be stuck with Karin for a long time to come and yet he is willing to bear it for the sake of irritating her for even a second.

Karin: Che. Suigetsu gives me the creeps.

Sasuke: Karin, come with me. I need you.

H-Huh? That sounded weird and for an instance, I felt a pricking feeling in my chest. Karin seemed as shocked as me but luckily I mask my emotions well. I walked back to find Suigetsu conversing with the prisoners. In his hand was the key to open the cages. 

He was chatting animatedly with them.  

"S-So the rumors are true?" 

Suigetsu: Of course they are.

"B-But then what is going to happen to us?"

Suigetsu: You'll all be set free. I was a prisoner just like you guys but I'm out now aren't I?

Akame: Just do us a favor. Spread the word about how Uchiha Sasuke killed Orochimaru and saved all the prisoners. Let the world know that the one who shall bring peace and stability to the world has come.

The men were overjoyed and as soon as we opened the door, they all ran away. I was initially worried whether they'd rush to harm me, Suigetsu or their warden Karin. We walked back to the lounge where Karin and Sasuke were conversing. Suigetsu was staring intently at me.

Sasuke: Why do you want them to spread that message to the world?

Akame: Simple. The more fame you get, the better insurance you get. Else you'll be troubled by hunter-nins more often. Besides this way...a brilliant insurance will be available in case if something goes wrong. Now please open the door.

No matter how much pressure I placed on the door knob, it wouldn't move. Suigetsu broke it open with the throat cleaver. 

Karin: Che. Can't it be just you and me, Sasuke?

Akame: So you're fine with coming along?

Karin: I-If its just f-for a while...

Sasuke: No. I need a platoon. In fact there is one more member to pick up. 

Suigetsu: One more?

Sasuke: Jugo.

Karin: Not that crazy psychopath with multiple personality disorder!

Akame: The very. But if it's Sasuke, we might just be able to manage handling him.
