* Authors Note: Before you read this l just want to let you know that l don't know anything about Drews parents, and remind you that this is all fictional. So please don't get angry with me!
Laurence's POV:
"You don't care?" I echoed in disbelief.
"That's what l said, isn't it?" Mrs Woolnough replied, her angry voice sounding tinny through our bad quality telephone.
"But he's your son..." l pointed out to her, it seemed as if she'd forgotten.
"And I know all about him and that Sumners boy! He's no son of mine!" She squarked and slammed her phone down furiously. l stared at my phone in shock, was she for real? Well the bitch didn't deserve a son as sweet as Drew.
l return to the living room where Luke and Kier wait for me to let them know the outcome of the phone call. Barronè is alone in the room that he and Drew once shared. None of us have spoken to him since we got back from the hospital yesterday, it's not that we don't want to, whenever any of us try to he just pretends to be sleeping. As soon as we leave the room again we hear him sobbing quietly.
"What did she say?" Kier asks once l have sat down next to him. He tucks his arm around me and pulls me close against his chest.
"The fucking bitch didn't care at all! She said she "Knew all about him and that Sumner boy" What does that even mean? l mean l know what she means, but... What the fuck?" l vented all my anger out to them and they listened silently whilst l explained the entire call to them. "l told her that he had- died and, well l didn't expect her to be too distressed because we all know that they didn't get on that well at all, but still l expected something, y'know? But zilch! She said that she doesn't care!"
Kier looked disgusted but when he open his mouth and began to speak l was surprised to hear soothing words, in opposed to the anger l was expecting."lt's okay Laur, relax. We can sort everything out ourselves, l'm sure that's what Drew would have wanted anyway." l frowned for a moment, confused as to what he was referring to and then it hit me.
The funeral.
"Shit." Luke said suddenly. Kier and l turned to face him, Kier raised an eyebrow questioningly. "The funeral. We can't organise it."
"Of course we can, he's our best friend. Why wouldn't we?" l ask, confused.
"We're not allowed to. lt's up to Drews next of kin what happens now."
"His next of kin?" l repeat, still confused.
His mum. Fuck.
Luke watches as l understand the meaning of his words. "If she gives us permission to organise it then we can... but l don't know if she will. She's never liked us much, has she?"
l nod and stare into my lap. What now? Drew is one of our best friends, there's no way we can let him leave this world without a decent funeral! The other two seemed to be thinking along the same line as me. "Maybe we can convince her to let us do it. lt's a lot less effort on her behalf, if we point that out she might agree. She wouldn't want the hassle of organising any sort of funeral." Kier said the last part venomously and l had to agree that as aweful as it sounded he was right. Mrs Woolnough would probably agree if she thought that she was gaining something, she doesn't care about putting her son to rest properly, she just wants to ensure that the friends he's left behind suffer even more than they already have.
"Maybe," l agree, but it's clear from my voice that l'm not expecting a lot. Leave it until tomorrow, give her a chance to calm down." l tell Keir and watch as his eyes widen comically.
"Me! Why me?" He moans dramatically and l just giggle slightly, l can't help it, he looks so cute.
