"Alrighty. You want the black one or the white one or the black and white one," I asked Toby in a hushed voice.
"I think the black one if looking pretty damn good," Cameron pipped up from the behind us.
"I think I'm gonna agree with him. He doesn't have a bridle either. Which means he's for sale anyways," Toby whispered.
I carefully walked in the stables and slipped a bridle over his head. Suddenly I heard footsteps and I pretended to be brushing the unicorn off with my hand.
"Yep he's a real beauty," a voice spoke.
"Good. My daughter needs a unicorn so she can learn to ride," the other voice spoke.
Both voices sounded southern-like and male. Their footsteps kept getting louder and louder. Soon I was face to face with two larger men. Both had shocked looks on their faces.
"Who are you," one of them exclaimed.
"I'm your stable girl! Didn't yer wife tell ya," I said in a fake southern accent.
"I don't have any stable girls," he said sounding terribly confused.
"Your wife hired me today and this is my unicorn! I thought she was gonna tell ya," I said softly looking at the ground. "Maybe I should just leave."
"But that unicorn was fer sale! He was born in this stable," he exclaimed.
"I know! Your wife said that the unicorn would be my pay," I looked into his eye.
"Look sir I'm sorry about the confusion if you would please just wait here for my wife we can sort this all out," he stammered turning to the other man.
"No thats fine. I don't even want a black unicorn. I'm leavin then," he said turning to leave.
"Little girl wait right here. Ima get my wife to sort this out," he said nervously and then left.
As soon as the screen door slammed I leaped up on her back and grabbed a saddle and lead on the way outta the stables.
"Go," I motioned for Cameron and Toby to start running.
We had left the other unicorns in the safety of the woods and thats where we were running to currently. I heard the screen door slam and I grabbed Toby and he threw him self up behind me. Cameron was already safely in the woods.
"There she tis," I heard a shout behind me. "Thiefin girl! Get back here!"
But we were to quick and easily reached the woods first. I leaped from the black unicorn to Storm-Brooke and we kept on ridding.
"Stop ya thieves! Get back here," we heard him call again.
Sesame growled from her perch in the supply wagon. I merely shook me head and she stopped.
"Well that was fun," Cameron said sarcastically.
"We should do that more often," Toby reply rolling his eyes.
"Come on guys! That was fun," I said smiling happily.
They both looked at me and shook their heads.
"Are we stopping for the night," Toby asked.
"Maybe. But not till we are farther away from that guy that gave us your little unicorn," I looked at the sky and saw the sun was setting. "What are you going to name him?"
"I don't know yet. But I would like some help," Toby replied.
"How bout Danger. Or Life Risker. Or Almost Get Us Caught," Cameron growled.
Ever since we had gotten back to the woods Cameron had never left my side. I could tell he was super worried about my safety. I gave him a grin and he just laughed a little.
"I don't know. They all sound too long," Toby sighed. "Naming things is just too hard!"
"Why not Evergreen? His eyes are that deep shade of green like the trees," I said hopefully.
"Nope. Too stupid," Toby concluded.
I rolled my eyes and quickened Storm-Brooke's pace. Cameron kept speed but Toby backed off a little bit.
"You alright," Cameron asked.
"Sure I guess," I focused my gaze on the trees ahead.
"What's wrong, Scarlett? And don't say nothing cuz I can feel your ever emotion," he said softly.
"I think this would have been more fun and a better trip if we didn't have old Toby back there. Wait till he gets mad," I growled.
'And also he can hear our every word cuz he's a half-wolf.' I thought to him.
Cameron laughed and I gave him the death stare. He put his hands above his head defensively.
"Don't you dare hurt her," Toby growled from beside me.
"Hurt her? Do you know who she is to me," Cameron sneered.
His eyes narrowed and he looked from Cameron to me.
"Fine," he growled. "But still, leave her be if she wants left alone."
"Toby," I warned. "We were just joking. Don't go all protective on me. I already have him to hover over me and supervise my every move."
I laughed a little at my own joke but it soon turned into a sigh.
"You two can sort it out from now on. I'm not having you two fight like little kids over me," I exclaimed.
Toby growled once more and dismounted the unicorn. He shifted in seconds and broke off into a run.
"You'd better be back Toby," I called after him. "He just needs to blow off some steam. He's stressed about leaving his clan and putting me in danger back there. You need to lay off of him."
"Oh I see. Now its all my fault. Whatever Scarlett. But you have to pick one of us," Cameron said, his voice sounded faraway.
"Oh so now you don't care that we are bonded by a special power? I'm sorry that I just stood up for my cousin! Think what you want Cameron but leave me alone till you have it all sorted out," I shook my head and swerved Storm-Brooke away from Cameron.
It was midnight before Toby finally returned. He just leaped back on his unicorn and fell asleep. I still had the lead tied to Storm-Brooke so I left it there. I was dozing off and I felt Storm-Brooke's lead be tied on to her bridle.
My head hurt terribly as I looked around. Where am I, I wondered. Suddenly words rang out from everywhere around me. I heard one sentence before the water turned blood red and the sky black.
I jolted awake. I was sweating but still on Storm-Brooke's back. The three unicorns had reached a stream and had stopped. I was the only one awake. But all I could think of was that dream. It felt like it had lasted seconds but I remember falling asleep around midnight and now the sun was rising.
But the sentence. Terrible, it was truly terrible. The words rang in my head:
'love your loved ones because soon all the rivers will run red before they can be blue once more.'
