Rays of sun penetrated the hard canopy of fresh leaves, leaving patches of light on the forest floor. Seemingly untouched by events of the past hundred years, the Spine stood strong and dense. Vines entangled the fallen logs and rocks. To an unobservant observer, the forest would look serene, in an almost dead state. Under each leave and each rock lay a thunderous microcosm of life, microscopic to the naked eye. A lone shadow sped through the thick forest. Fallen leaves crunched and crackled under heavily padded paws. The ground rumbled under the ferocity of each thundering step. The shadow was being chased. The protective barriers encasing the Spine were weakening. The others had to be warned. The caves were still another league or so into the forest. The shadow was not going to make it.
