Hey guys I'm back :)
I'll be uploading a chapter now and another in a few hours as promised :)
--------------chapter 11 starts here-------------
I put down the phone and ran out of the house. There were still a few hours before my daily errands, so there was plenty of time to do this. I definitely wanted to talk with Christopher more than anything else. I mean yeah sure I trust my mom when she says that he's okay, but when you have a bond like Christopher and I do, there's nothing as heartwarming as hearing it yourself. Besides it couldn't do him any harm to see me visit him.
I hurried to the eastern side of the marketplace- stopping in front of a hardware store. Jake stood there- facing towards the wall before catching me in the corner of his eye and turning around to face me.
"Hey man" he said extending his hand
I grabbed it and pulled him into a hug.
"So what's the plan?" I asked while releasing him from the hug.
He looked towards the four buildings built into the wall- the four buildings that both the rich and the poor had in common. The police station, the hospital, the fire station and city hall. They were arranged in that order from farthest to the closest. He'd obviously chosen this location because of the excellent view of the police station, and it's ability to hide us- we'd be able to blend into the crowd of the market. There was definitely no better point to start anything from.
"The hospital has four floors" Jake started. "Each floor is restricted access except for the ground floor- which acts as a reception. The next three floors are the day clinic, the wards and the sample testing- in that order. Your brother is located in the wards- which is in the form of a ring- half for rich and half for poor. Being poor, his side will be open only during night hours- until 9am and no visitors will be allowed.
I rolled my eyes. "tell me something I don't know." I'd known all this for years..
Jake pointed to a bush located between the hospital and the fire station. "That bush over there has access to an air duct. Once in, I can navigate us up two floors and into the semicircle which your brother is in. It's daytime- Meaning visitors will only be allowed into the rich half of the ring. Since the meal delivery is automated, we shouldn't bump into anyone."
"But how will you be able to guide us into the poor half? Do you know the way?"
"Yeah. Remember that time a few years back when I broke my leg?"
I nodded. He'd broken his leg In a go karting crash. He underwent surgery and wasn't allowed out of the hospital for a month. Being an outdoors person, he was devastated. Until he got used to it at least.
"Let's just say I wasn't in my room the whole night."
I was confused. Was he saying he snuck out?
"And when did you do this?" I asked
"every night"
There was utter silence. I knew this guy was pretty crazy, but with a broken leg after surgery? That was a whole new level!!
"Dude.." I was speechless.
"Just forget about that. It's not important right now. Let's go see Christopher" He replied.
We slowly walked out of the crowd of the marketplace- towards the four buildings. A policeman outside the station looked at us.I had a feeling he knew that we were definitely up to no good.
Then I saw jake fall over forwards and cover his mouth with his hands. I caught on to his act and grabbed him- looking at him with concern. Using myself as a crutch, I pretended to prop him upright and continue walking towards our destination.
The policeman looked at jake, at the hospital, and then back at jake and finally lost interest and turned away.
Jake then staggered- deviating our path towards the side of the hospital adjacent to the bush. I was shocked when I realized what he'd done. It was a masterstroke. Correcting our course without alerting a single person. Even after knowing him so long, the fact that he could still surprise me like that was astounding.
As we neared the hospital corner, we dove into a bush. After some moving around and searching, we were able to find the grate covering the ventilation shaft and pull it out- along with its rusty bolts.
We glanced at each other and grinned.
"You ready?" He asked. And before I could even respond, he'd pushed me into the duct and closed the grate behind us.
