Okay guys we're almost at the end of Flipsyde.. Thanks to you all, this has reached rank 74 in sci-fi and first on the sci-fi hotlist.. Thank you all so much!!
This has been a great journey and I hope y'all have enjoyed it as much as I did.. But come Sunday, this book will be over (for better or worse)
Thank you all for your support! :)
------------chapter 27 starts here------------
I stood in front of the Flipsyde building facing the lone road that connected it to the city. The road wasn't a long one- merely twenty-five miles, but the desert around seemed to make even the part visible to appear much longer. That's the road our visitors would be coming down..
The light of the morning sun seemed to illuminate the surroundings in a glowing, almost magical light. A light breeze blew through the barren lands surrounding the building. I wondered why they were barren. A side effect of the machine itself maybe?
Anyways, I could ponder about that later.
I turned around to face the door of the building. It wasn't locked. It wasn't guarded. To put it simply, nobody was stupid enough to try and mess with the building.. And those who were desperate enough to try it? Well they had no way to reach here.. The taxi fares were through the roof.. Leaving the city and risking getting caught by any state patrols? Nobody wanted to take that risk..
I looked down. Isa was sitting- resting her back against the wall, biding her time by curling her hair around her finger as she stared forward- deep in thought. I had the urge to sit down beside her, but I knew I couldn't afford to get distracted now..
I thought about our plan.. Had we covered everything up well enough? We had made our visits to the poor side to make sure Lance was satisfied and our trips to the police station to convince Hans.
Once again, a shade of doubt started to creep into my mind.
We had no chance of beating either of them in a one on one battle. Or even a two on one battle for that matter..
They were simply too smart for that
------------------------------------------------
A week earlier
I picked up the black phone and flipped it open.
I typed in the message just as Isa and I had rehearsed. Any deviation from this could alert Lance to my plan..
Isa would be sending a message to Hans at the same time. If this worked, we might be able to finish off our problems for good..
-----------------------------------------------
My chain of thought was interrupted by a black Mercedes pulling into the parking lot, before turning round the corner of the building. Obviously he wouldn't leave it in plain sight.. Not for what was about to happen..
My heart fluttered nervously as I saw Lance turn the corner and approach me.
"Thank you for seeing the right side Marcus" he said, smiling. "I was afraid you'd try to double cross me, and that I'd have to take action."
I fought the urge to look down- forcing myself to keep looking straight into his eyes. I couldn't let him detect that something was wrong.
His eyes lowered, finally settling on Isa. "Is this the young lady who betrayed her side to help us? Well once this is over, she can see for herself how generous I can really be."
Isa smiled. It didn't appear fake, but somewhere in my head I knew her blood was boiling with rage. That she wanted him to just drop dead right there..
Lance's gaze shifted off of her- back to me. "When is he going to come?"
"9:00."
"Ten minutes? Alright. I'll give you guys twenty. But if he doesn't show up.."
"Don't worry.. He will"
I knew he would show up..
--------------------------------------------
As my thumb hovered over the send button- I thought back to Isa.. Would she be able to convince Hans to come there?
I mentally slapped myself. Of course she would! It made perfect sense! The money being stored the one place nobody would ever dare to go! The Flipsyde building.
He couldn't afford to draw attention to himself by bringing people along with him. On the other hand, he couldn't ignore the tip. He would come.. Alone.. And that would provide us a decent chance of finishing out on top.
I looked through my message to Lance.
I won't be able to provide you with the information as to the rebel committee's meeting point. However, next week if you come at 8:50a.m. to the Flipsyde building, I can hand you the man that can.. Hans Mortensen.
As my hand crashed down on the send button, I gulped. There was no going back anymore.. We had to trust ourselves with this.
-----------------------------------------------
We had no chance of beating either of them in a one on one battle. Or even a two on one battle for that matter..
They were simply too smart for that.
But we could definitely make them beat each other..
