------------chapter 6 begins here------------
We knew the only way to save Christopher was to steal from the rich. But nobody wanted to say it.. I mean why leave ourselves without any hope..? Because clearly it was an impossible task..
However, just because of that, we wouldn't be able to plan for something we were bound to do.. And so I did the thing none of us wanted to do.
"We have to plan a raid"
Dave and mom both looked towards the floor
"The committee isn't willing to plan any raids with the new security measures in place" Dave replied .
"You know that's not what I meant"
There was silence as the three of us tried not to accept the truth.. There had to be some way. This was madness..
Finally mom spoke up. "Okay.. We'll keep the option open. We'll scout the area tonight and try and find a good place to strike. Tomorrow, if all else fails, we go over that wall and see what awaits us."
I was both relieved and panic-struck that she accepted my suggestion. We couldn't leave our best chance of saving christopher behind.. But at the same time, it was the riskiest of the three.. Were we willing to risk losing another to save him?
"But.." She continued, "Marcus stays out of it."
This couldn't be possible!! They couldn't possibly leave me out of this!! If they failed, how would I ever live with myself?!?! Just sitting at home while my brother was on his deathbed??
"That's not an option! I'm not-" I started before she cut me off
"Listen Marcus, you don't have a choice!" Im not letting you raid.. You're still a kid!! And definitely not now- it's the worst possible period to raid! I don't care what the situation is!!" She said- her eyes blazing with conviction.
I sensed that the argument was over- I clearly had no say here- and became quiet. Feigning frustration, I ran to my room and slammed the door. I needed them to think I wasn't gonna try anything so I could go through with what i was planning to do.
I was going over that wall tonight.
Yes it was rash and I had no plan. But me going tonight would help because:
1. I was younger and therefore could escape easier in case anything goes wrong
2. I was starting today- meaning even if I failed, they still had a chance tomorrow.
3. It was me. If anything went wrong, mom and Dave would still be there to help christopher.
Thinking about it one last time, I decided to go through with it..
-----------------------------------------------
About half an hour later, I heard the door shut. I slowly walked out of my room- making sure that mom and Dave weren't still here. As soon as I was sure, I grabbed a backpack and made a beeline for the door. Once I was out, there was pretty much no chance theyd see me. Our house had way too many ways to get to the wall for me to actually bump into them.
I decided to take a fairly long route just to decrease the chances of running into them further and started jogging towards that thirty foot high wall in the distance. I rubbed my hands together to warm them up for the climbing I would be doing- tonight was definitely gonna be a long night.
As I neared the wall, I selected a part hidden from view by the trees- this would ensure that i could climb at my own pace- without alerting someone.
I looked at the wall. The mortar was worn down- probably by repeated raiding- in a way that it provided excellent handholds and footholds. I put my shoes into my backpack, inserted my hand into the gap between two bricks and started climbing.
Climbing the wall was no easy task. This was definitely no Mario game. The weight of my body seemed to stretch my arms, and the occasional sharp edges on the bricks definitely left their mark on my fingers and toes.
i decided I had to think about something. I was only making a foot every minute or two and there was no way I'd be able to survive that long without distracting myself.
I started to think about Christopher. The times we'd spent together. The things I'd loved about him. These moments gave me new energy- increasing my strength and will to go forward. I remembered the moment I saw him on the floor. The condition he was in. What pain he must be going through right ...
I was brought back to reality as my hand failed to get a grip on the wall and I almost fell backwards to the ground. Steadying myself, I came back to focus only to see that Id reached the top of the wall. With one last surge of energy, I heaved myself up onto the top of the wall.
I positioned myself at the middle of the five foot thick wall and took a moment to catch my breath.
As I sat up, the realization of what I was about to attempt hit me.. I had never raided before.. Could I do it? I mean even without the increased security it was pretty much suicidal.. Was it a risk worth taking..?
And then I remembered Christopher- the reason I came so far.. I couldn't fail him now..
Then I took the step that would entwine me with my destiny.. The step that would change my life forever.. The step towards my first raid..
