"I am literally the coolest person on this earth." Brendon says to his phone which he is currently periscoping on. Karen looks over at me and snorts. The two of us our currently laying in the shade on our towels. We both start laughing and I remove my sunglasses.
"Was that Syd laughing?" He repeats someone's question. "Yup." He points the camera at me. I wave and Karen covers her face with her towel. "Who's the other girl? Oh that's Karen." He pauses before starting to speak in his girl voice. "She's like Sydney's best friend. We talk about boys, and makeup, and lots and lots and lots of other girly things!" He says before killing the weird voice. He goes on to answer more questions. As he does so, Karen and I start our own conversation.
"So, seeing any hot celebrity boys?" She asks me, rolling onto her back and looking up at the tree. I do the same and sigh. "You know, being a celebrity like you, they must come running." I chuckle.
"No. How about you? Got your eyes on anyone?" I ask. She nods and smiles.
"The guy who works at the smoothie place at the mall is a ten out of ten." She runs a hand through her hair. "Remember that girl who won the talent show last year? Yeah, Chloe? We've been talking lately." I lean against her.
"Ohhhhh Karen's got a crush." I say immaturely. "I think she's straight though, Karen." She lets out a low laugh and lowers her sunglasses.
"Sweetie, I can change that." I shriek and burst it to laughter. Brendon gives us a strange look before standing up and walking towards the house.
"Why am I going into the house?" He stops and looks at us. "Their are talking about boys," he stops for a moment. "And girls." He then walks into the house. I look back at her and chuckle.
"Have fun with that." We both giggle. "So how has your summer been?" I ask her. She shrugs and puts her hands on her stomach.
"It's been pretty chill. You?" She asks. Oh you know, the usual. Helping my fathers ex-best friend/boyfriend record his album behind his back. Is she forgetting?
"Nothing much." I say. All of a sudden, my phone goes off next to me. I reach over and check who had texted me, it was Ryan. Then it hits me, I never told Karen about the whole Ryan thing. That explains a lot.
Ryan: "I kinda want to make a remix of the Jurassic Park theme song. Idk why, just for shits and giggles. Gonna play it at my wedding."
"Who's bothering you? Tell them to back off, we are having a relaxing moment." She says, not even shifting. I type back a simple response.
Me: "I'm just not going to ask why you suddenly thought of that, Ryro."
I set my phone aside trying not to laugh. He sends me stuff like this just out of nowhere, his strange little ideas.
"Ah, just Charlie." I lie.
"Oh! I thought he was out of town. How is he?" She questions. Shit.
"He's good, just sending me weird quotes." I say, cringing at how bad I am at lying. She chuckles.
"Seems like him." She says. I smile, noticing that I had just gotten away with my little. She was about to say more but Brendon slid the door open.
"Hey Syd could you come here for a minute?" He asks.
"Sure thing." I get up, leaving my Karen behind. I walk over to him. We walk into the house.
"Hey so Angie want me to take her out for it little, no parties, boys, drugs." He grabs his phone. "I'll be back before dinner." He walks back over to me and kisses my forehead. "Goodbye child." I giggle and watch him walk out the front door. I go my separate way and walk back out the back door into the backyard.
"Hey, Brendon's going out for a little. We can swim if-" I look over at her and freeze. She's holding my phone, her eyes and mouth wide open. She notices me and doesn't move. "Karen..." I start but don't finish. I sprint over and snatch my phone out of her hands. There were three new texts from Ryan.
Ryan: "God I fucking love Jurassic Park."
Ryan: "I need to take a vacation, do do do do."
Ryan: "See what I did there. Taking my old songs and putting them with the Jurassic Park theme. Syd I'm brilliant. That's it, next time I use the studio, this is happening."
I curse and run a hand through my hair. She looks up at me still with her wide eyes.
"Syd... Is that who I think it is?" She asks quietly. We stare at each other for a while before I drop to the ground next to her and sigh.
"That was Ryan Ross." I say, looking away. She gasps and flips out.
"Ryan Ross?! The Ryan Ross!" I cover her mouth.
"Shut up! You never know who could be around here!" I hiss. She then lowers her voice and raises her eyebrows.
"You have so so much explaining to do Missy!" She whispers loudly. I sigh and look down at my phone. "Are they friends again?" She asks. I shake my head and she shifts. "Then why are you talking to him?" She asks, concerned.
"Do you want me to start from the beginning of the story?" I ask her, setting my phone aside and sighing.
"Um, yes please. I'm extremely confused." She says.
"Ok then shut up." I clear my throat and look back at her. "So one day, a few months ago, I was home alone and there was a knock at the door. I of course answered in and there was a man there. It took me a while to notice that it was him. After I did, he told me that he was going to ask Brendon if he could use the backyard studio." I pause and get more comfortable. "He convinced me to let him use it behind Brendon's back." Karen gasps. "Shut up I'm not done yet. Well anyways, he pays me every time he uses it. He usually comes over whenever Brendon's gone." I say. Karen gives me her wide eyed look again.
"Sydney what he Brendon finds out! Or even worse, Angie! She could ruin your life." Karen says. I groan and lay down on the towel again.
"Well he hasn't yet and I'm pretty sure Angie doesn't even know who Ryan is." I say. She lays down next to me again.
"I guess you're right. But you don't know why he was kicked out of panic, he could have stolen songs off the new album Syd." She says.
"No no, I know why he left panic." I say. She gives me an interesting look. "You see, Brendon was dating a girl at the time. He never told the band about her. Apparently when he would wake up, she would be gone. He just thought that she was going to work but she wasn't." I pause, trying to remember the story. "One day, Brendon followed her. He followed her to Ryan's house. He walked into his house to find them making out." Karen cringes.
"Oh god, that's tough." She sighs. "What happened next?" I continue the story.
"Well, Ryan tried to tell him that he didn't know that she was his boyfriend and that she tricked him. Brendon didn't believe him. Jon sided with Ryan and they left the band." I finish. She looks over at me.
"That's bad." She says, running a hand through her hair. "Does Brendon still not believe him?" She asks.
"I don't know." She looks over at me. "He even said that he wouldn't know what to do if he saw him." I sigh.
"Dude, that's rough." She says, pulling her phone out magically out of her swim top.
"How-" I stop myself. "You know what, I'm just not going to ask." I say chuckling, oh Karen.
There, I've told my two best friends about the whole Ryan thing. Now I just need to get rid of Angie and get Ryan's album done. Now everything just needs to go as planned. Let's hope it does.
