                                                  Max's POV

I heard the door creak open as my mother's face popped in.

"Yes?" I asked looking at her. Ever since my dad died, which is something I don't want to even think about, our relationship was strained.

I looked back at my phone as she hesitated to start the conversation.

"Honey, tomorrow we're going to the Thompson's house for dinner, okay?" she said slightly uneasy. She knew that the Thompson family was a hard topic for me.

I widened my eyes, processing what she'd told me. I started to panic, I couldn't go anywhere near Hailey. I couldn't even concentrate in class today because of her. She was like a candle in the darkness.  She was like an ethereal beauty, fragile yet intimidating at the same time.

And people thought I wasn't poetic.

I wonder if she had a boyfriend? As her best friend I would have put him through a tough questionnaire. Not to mention insult him at every opportunity. I almost snickered.

No, that's none of my concern, because I wasn't going to talk to her.

What was wrong with me?

I couldn't stop myself from wanting to talk to her. Why couldn't I stop glancing at her every freaking second? Luckily I was good at putting on a mask. It was one of the first things I'd had to learn in London, after my father's death.

Man, she would hate me for not talking to her. The look on her face showed everything, ranging from disbelief to hurt and from that to pure rage.

She's never going to forgive me for this.

"Honey?" asked my mother starrling me, out of my reverie.

"N-no I can't, I've eh-got this thing to go to." I stammered, looking into my phone.

I quickly texted Simon, one of my old friends.

-Si? Dude help!

Waz up?

-Coming to your house tmrw night?

Can't, goin 2 party.

-Wer?

Jennifer Simons.

I looked at my mother whose hand covered her face in disappointment.

"I'm going to a party mom. I'm sorry. Maybe another time." I said, as sweetly as possible.

She sighed heavily. But she resigned. She went to the door and closed it.

-Text me the address.

I sighed in relief. I wouldn't see Hailey now. She hated parties, they were her worst nightmare. She even wouldn't step near a party. It was a childhood trauma for her.

So I was safe, for now.
