Flashback

"Hey DEXTER! TAKE ME TO YOUR LAB!!" cried one of the kids at daycare. I turned my head away, ashamed.

Why did I have to have four whole names? Why not three like most kids or two?

My third name. Dexter. Yuck. I hated it. Apparently everyone else did too. But unlike me, they wanted to publicize it. Day two at the daycare my mom had left me in and I already wanted to go back to England.

"Hey stop!" Cried a small slightly chubby girl with a curly mop of red hair and bright green eyes.

No one had ever stood up for me before. Who was this girl? My curiosity took over me and I looked at her strangely, cocking my head slightly to the right.

"What'd ya want, Torchlight?" Asked the same kid. Then was when it struck me. She was bullied too. How devastating. Here was someone I could actually relate to. She shouted at him to stop bullying me and her. She called him Nathen.

"I don't take orders from you!" cried Nathen.

I was resolute to help her, but she looked like she had everything under control. She yelled at the poor kid and took him by the shoulders and shook him so hard he almost fell.

The teacher saw what happened and rushed over. She put me and the red haired girl that they called 'torchlight' to a corner, while everyone else went outside to play.

Torchlight turned to me and gave me a smile.

"Hey! I'm Hailey, but my friends call me Lee." She said, smiling widely.

"So I'm your friend?" I asked, giving her a shy grin.

"If you want to." She said shrugging as casually as possible, but her eyes were begging for a yes.

"Only if you never call me DEXTER." I said, spitting out the name venomously.

"No problem. I think you a genius anyway." She said smiling.

"Shake." I told her. She was about to put her hand in mine when she hesitated.

"Promise you won't call me Torchlight or make fun o' my hair???" She asked me, looking forlorn. I felt sad for her. I could relate to that sad, crushed feeling.

"Deal." I replied giving her a toothy smile.

"What's your name?" She asked.

"Maxon Stevens, but my friends call me Max." I said grinning once again.
