I was up to my throat in punishment this time. My mother had gone off in a vicious rant about how I shouldn't be talking to men with earrings and leather jackets. I suppose this was the last straw for her because her last threat had come true. I was confined to my room for the rest of the five months until Ultra. Thinking about all of this made me think about tonight and whether I'd be able to see Dylan again.
Our conversation was unlike any other I've ever had. Besides my conversations with Cody, none of the other boys I've met spoke to me in such a direct manner. He was so different from the rest. And not only in the way that he spoke, but in the way that he dressed and the way that he held himself, with so much confidence you were certain he'd came from Sec.1 or 2.
I suppose that was the ultimate reason why, like he said, no one bothered to stop him. He probably drifted through the sections with ease seeing as he just gave off that confident vibe. He knew who he was and where he was going and nobody bothered to stop him because of that fact. But, another point that caused me to question it all. He was from Section 58.
My mother complained about his jewelry, his hair and his attire. But she said nothing about his section, which I'm betting is a good thing because it means that she has no idea he's part of the higher dwellers. And if she did, I'm sure she would've inflicted physical pain on me instead of just verbal.
How was it possible? That no one could see that he was from such a high section and rolling here with the privileged? He certainly didn't dress like he was from such a high section and the confidence that emanated off his very skin made everyone a bit skeptical I think. I needed to find out more. I craved to know what life was like beyond Sec.2 and whether the world was the same there as it was here. After having met Dylan, I began questioning that thought.
Mum wouldn't let me see Cody that night. She told him that I was sick and changed the code on my door so no one could come in or go out. Even though she wouldn't let him see me, it didn't stop him from talking to me. Cody's face filled up the screen of my laptop as he asked me question upon question about Dylan from his room. Mother couldn't stop us from talking to each other. We'd always find a way. And he knew the whole 'me being sick' story was a load of shit.
"So, when you gonna see him again?" Cody asked as he shoved the last of his synthesized fries into his mouth.
"I'm supposed to see him right now. He told me to meet him in the Square tonight."
Cody's eyes widened and he spoke through a mouthful of food, "Then what the hell are you still doing here?"
"Mum changed the code, remember? I can't get out of the room." I said with a raised eyebrow. I could go out the window, but that would probably set off some other type of booby trap my mother had planned for me. So, I didn't even think about it.
He crumbled up the empty fries packet and sighed, "I'm sorry, J." he said, "I could try figure out the code if you want."
"It's cool. She's still letting me eat so the punishment isn't that bad, yet. But I don't doubt for one second that she'll starve me for the rest of the year until Ultra if I sneak out."
Cody smirked, "I swear it like she hates you."
"She does hate me." I said with a deadpan expression and Cody chuckled a bit.
"Nah, you just get on her left tit for some unknown reason. I'm sure she still loves you, Janie."
"I highly doubt it."
"So when are you going to see him then? If not tonight, I mean."
I shrugged, "No clue. But I suppose it's what's best." His brow furrowed and I explained, "The suitor's ceremony is next week, remember?" I said and Cody moaned in irritation.
