"And that is why they picked me for future CEO." Jeremy concluded. I hardly noticed. He'd been talking for the past half hour and I'd been staring at his lips, but hadn't heard a single word he said. "Jane?"
"What?" I snapped back to reality. "Oh yeah. That's great. Really awesome."
He smiled smugly, as if I actually knew what he was talking about and was praising him for it. We were sat at some fancy restaurant having dinner our mother's forced us into. We'd already made it through the main course so, thankfully, it was nearly over and I could go home. I hadn't said goodbye to Dylan last night and I must say, our conversation thereafter was very interesting. I don't remember all the details, but it kinda went something like this:
'So, when is this going to happen then?'
This being him entering my sheets and us committing the 'ultimate act of complete rebellion'.
'Not right now.' I told him. 'You're gonna have to try a lot harder if you wanna soil my sheets.'
The waiter came over and asked for deserts in which Jeremy stated I'd have nothing because I should, quote – watch my figure – unquote. I nearly leaped over the table to gut punch him, but my phone buzzed in my new accessory. A purse, which I specifically asked to borrow from mother. She was as delightfully pleased as I was. At least now, Dylan literally couldn't tease me about anything.
Speaking about Dylan...
'janie bear?'
A text from him lit up my phone screen and I bit my lip to conceal a smile.
I replied with, 'Dylan?'
'whatcha doin'?'
'I'm at dinner.'
'so i see'
I frowned at the text. Was he here? Looking up from my screen, I scanned the crowd of snobs and found no Dylan. Returning to my phone, I received another text.
'join me for a run in the rain?'
A second later, as if the gods above were reading my texts with Dylan, a crack of lighting sounded in my ears and automatically, my eyes shot up to the window behind Jeremy where I found none other than Dylan, standing and waiting for me. He waved me over, then disappeared.
My eyes widened and Jeremy took a sip of his wine before I turned my attention to the table, gulping down my own in the process. "You would need to stop that once we're on Ultra, you know." I frowned and he pointed to my empty wine glass. Did he really just imply that I was an alcoholic that needed a break? I was too focused on Dylan outside to react appropriately so I mumbled a response. But this didn't stop Jeremy. "So, Jane. How many children do you want?"
That certainly caught my attention and I frowned in disbelief at the fool, "What?"
He looked startled. "Oh, uh... you know, we can have as many as you want. But we at least need to have one."
"I'm sorry – we?"
"Yes. We. I thought it would be a good topic for discussion."
"And why is that?"
"Well – for our... future."
"Our future?"
"Yes." He swallowed. "You see, Jane. I have been courting you for quite some time now. And I just think that... that the time is right."
Oh no... this is not going to be good.
"What I'm trying to say... is... is that... well, will you–"
