Soon enough, Mr. Turner made some excuse about having to head back to the auditorium, but that he'd call Alan later.
Emily suddenly felt rather intimidated to be alone with the doctor and former FBI agent. He wasn't coming across as particularly friendly.
"You gonna spit out that question or watch me with doe eyes, miss glasses?" The man asked, cocking a brow.
Emily briefly thought that the doctor and Jake would get along swimmingly. Both held common interest in calling others names that weren't necessarily polite. It was truly now or never.
Emily sighed, rubbing the back of her neck gently. "I uh...I think my ex-boyfriend is following me." She couldn't say the word stalking. It felt too strange on the tip of her tongue.
The doctor snorted as he adjusted his beanie. Motioning to follow him outside, he made a brisk walk as he pushed the glass doors open to exit the building. Emily followed him out the doors of the school, trying to think of the proper wording to explain her story.
"Now, why is it you think he's stalking you?" Dr. O'Hare asked, yawning slightly. He didn't beat around the bush with the phrasing.
"Because I broke up with him" Emily answered, feeling the reason why she thought Declan was stalking her should've been fairly obvious with her stating he was her ex.
The doctor snorted. "Yeah smartass, I get that. I'm asking why you think it's your former beau. Are you saying you don't know for certain?"
"I...guess..." Emily said, clearing her throat. "It's complicated. For the short almost two weeks we dated, he was possessive...He..."
"-Didn't like you hanging around male friends, didn't like you talking to other guys in general....Every time he called or text, he expected you to answer, and then he'd be mad if you didn't immediately?" Dr. O'Hare interrupted, rubbing his thumb nail with his pointer finger. He wasn't even watching Emily. It was as if he could read her mind. It was as though he knew the description of Declan before Emily even had to say it.
"Exactly!" Emily nodded. "Then he got really upset that I was still signed up on the dating site we met on, and he confronted me about it-"
"-So he didn't like you were stepping out on him. Hate to break it to you girlie, most guys tend not to like that" he snickered, causing Emily to scowl. The doctor wasn't even letting her finish before typecasting this as simple teenage drama.
"I wasn't cheating on him!" Emily protested with a scowl. "Look, that was the day he hit me."
The stupid grin the doctor wore slowly slipped from his face. He now sported a rather guilty expression. "Oh."
Dr. O'Hare said nothing more, obviously wanting Emily to further elaborate.
"He uh...He tried...uh..." Emily trailed off, blushing beet red at the very idea of mentioning that Declan tried pressuring her for sex.
"Tick tock, glasses..." Dr. O'Hare said, pointing at his watch. He was clearly growing bored of this conversation as the two of them made their way across the parking lot at a slow pace.
Emily grimaced. "He tried pressuring me for sex in an empty parking lot....He made a big slew that after five dates I should be sleeping with him. I said no, so he hit me. Then, he said I needed time to think about my behavior....I think he's been following me since then. Well, maybe even before that, too...To art class, to my job....I've seen a black sedan twice, now-"
