There was practically nothing Ben could contribute to halting Declan's craziness. Mostly, because there was no need to do anything. Nothing more was done the entire week that Ben stayed at the farm. No more strange feelings of being followed, no more gifts left, and no more of Emily waking up in a cold sweat feeling there was someone just watching her sleep. Declan sent heavy glares towards Emily in the Chemistry class she shared with him, but she had Jake around who would either throw sarcastic commentary his way or send a murderous glare right back at him.
Emily never walked alone, so she was never put in the opportunity of being stuck around Declan again.
Things acually started to slip off into the back to normal spectrum. Emily turned eighteen, and even got to spend time with her big brother again. After a few days with the family, Ben had to go back to New York, but he promised to call every night to discuss the previous Declan problem. He took with him the card to New York, claiming he had a new friend in the crime lab who owed him a favor. Even though Declan Carter was most likely not in the system, it didn't hurt having evidence against him incase something more were to happen.
Emily's parents were furious that the Carters tried getting Emily suspended, but Ben reassured them that he solved everything. Principal Moore wasn't going to even dare to punish Emily after the threats Ben cast him. He was right. Principal Moore even called and sent Emily's parents emails apologizing for even calling the impromptu meeting that day.
His hands had probably been tied by the Carters into calling themeeting in the first place.
Even though Declan was a nasty little liar who Emily figured must be suffering from severe mental problems, he didn't try anything again. It was either Ben or Detective Kinkaid showing they weren't afraid of him that must've made him realize he should cut the drama. Emily didn't care what it was that scared him off, she was just happy everything seemed to finally be over.
As the two weeks passed by, Emily found prom was just the next day.
She stared gloomily at the sea foam-green mermaid gown her mother had apparently ordered for her. The gown was hung up on a hangar laid across the chair residing in Emily's room. It was a beautiful dress - a light shimmery number, and it even fit Emily perfectly. It hugged her curves just right without being too tight or too revealing. There was even a pair of glittery light green pumps to match. She would've looked gorgeous - if she were going.
"Wow....That looks pretty" Jake comented from the doorway.
Emily glanced at him, momentarily forgetting why he was in the door and not the window. She had forgotten she asked Ben to nail it shut when he was here. It helped her sleep at night knowing no one could crawl through it. She highly doubted the swave Declan did something as mediocre as climb through her bedroom window, but it was better to be safe than sorry in her opinion. The downside was, Jake couldn't really sneak in at night anymore.
"I guess" Emily said, moving back to her desk where she kept her Chemistry notebook. "I got down the notes, if you look through all of them before Monday, you'll be able to ace that test easily."
"You are not making me go through that again" Jake grimaced. "I'd happily chew my own arm off rather than look at another piece of Chemistry homework."
"Nice attitude" Emily laughed, scribbling a few more details as Jake walked around the room.
"I don't think your mom is used to be knocking on the front door" Jake snorted, as he walked closer to the bed. Emily noticed he cast her a quick look before looking back on the dress. "Oh...Did you get a new date to prom?"
Emily didn't look up as he watched the dress carefully. "No - my mom ordered that a few weeks ago after....Well, my crazy ex told her we were going together. I'm looking into selling it on Amazon or something since I can't return it."
