Zayn's P.O.V
"And where have you been?" Lexi asked when I walked in the door.
"The store?" I told her, holding up the grocery bags in my hands.
She glanced at the clock, "for four hours?" I checked the clock too, seeing that yeah, it had been four hours. Well, shit.
"Um.." I was looking for an excuse, but couldn't think of any good ones, "there was a long line?"
"Long lines at the grocery store don't take four hours, Zayn," She said to me, glaring. "now where were you really?"
"I was at the store," I told her again. Which, yes I was at the store, but I was trying to get something special done for her and I couldn't tell her that.
"You were not at the store for four hours. And if you would quit lying to my face, that would be great," She said angrily.
"I'm not lying to your face," I sighed. She'd been like this lately, questioning me extensively on a regular basis. "I was at the store."
"And what exactly were you doing at the store for four hours?" She questioned, humoring me.
"I-can't tell you that," I told her regretfully. I knew that wouldn't help my case, but I wasn't going to tell her what I was there for. I would have to deal.
"You can't tell me what you were doing at the grocery store for four hours?!" She blew up.
"No.." I trailed off.
"Were you with another girl?"
"What?! No, of course not!" I yelled, hurt.
"What else could you be doing for that long?!"
"I can't tell you."
She took out her phone randomly, and shoved it in my face. On the screen was a picture of myself with a fan. I remembered her. It was a couple years ago or so, and she was the only person I had seen that day that didn't scream in my face. She was very friendly, actually. We had a nice conversation, and when she asked me to take a picture kissing her cheek, I did it willingly. It's not totally uncommon. "Was it with her?!"
"Lexi, I didn't cheat on you!" Frankly, I was still pissed right off. I was gone for a couple hours longer than I thought I would be, and she starts screaming and accusing me of cheating on her with a fan I'd met a couple years ago.
"Who is she then?!"
"She's a fucking fan! I met her two years ago! That picture was taken when we were on a short break in the tour!"
"How come you're kissing her cheek then?!"
"Because she asked me to! A lot of fans were asking for photos like that when we first started! I hadn't even met you then. Two years! Two years ago that was taken! Why would you even think that I would cheat on you?! And how could you not even tell that was an old photo?!"
"The date says," she said to me, glancing at the date and time, "May 12, 2014.." she said the last part quietly.
"Yes. Two years ago!" I shouted at her. I slammed the receipt in my hand angrily onto the table, "and there's your reason I was gone so long!"
"Elm Tree Engravings," She read from the top of it, "you were-"
"Yes, I was getting a ring engraved for you. It was a promise ring, not that it matters now," I walked past her angrily and grabbed my bag of stuff from her room, leaving her staring blankly in the kitchen. I got back downstairs, and she was still standing in the middle of the room. "I'm going to Felicity's. Goodbye, Elexis."
A hurt look crossed her face as I used her full name, and I ignored it, leaving the house, hauling my bag behind me. I angrily opened the passenger door, throwing my bag in carelessly. I slammed it, angrily opening the driver's side as well, and slamming it after climbing in. I pulled out of the driveway, just as Lexi ran out the door, tears streaming down her face. I just kept driving.
