October 1998
Through the window I saw Lindsey get out of the car and roll his luggage up the pathway to the porch, flinging the door open for him.
"Hey."
"Hi."
"Are you...OK? You seem a little...Flustered." He followed me into the lounge where we sat on the couch.
"No I'm good, what about you? How did it go."
"I did what you told me to. She wasn't too...Happy, but..."
"Let's not talk about her right now, OK?"
"OK."
"I'm glad you got to spend time with Will."
"Me too, it's not like this lifestyle was ever suited for family anyway, but...I can see myself winding down over the next few years."
I nodded slowly and there was a silence for a while, broken only by the birds outside the window.
"When you left the house, before you went to the airport, I didn't tell you..."
"Tell me what?"
"That I..." I took a deep breath, needing but not wanting to have to admit this, "I love you too. If something happens...I just need you to know that. Not that you haven't got a million things to prove if we want this to work. You broke my heart Lindsey, but we've been blessed with a pregnancy, and I think it's our duty to follow our destiny with it."
"Thank- you. I...You know I love you more, and I...I've done you wrong. All I ever wanted was you, I'll never hurt you again, you are so precious to me."
I sniffed, allowing him to kiss my cheek, placing his palm over my ever-swelling stomach, finding myself resting my head on his shoulder- closer than we'd been since we'd last made love, the morning before I left for my first out-of-state tour date in the summer.
"I know you didn't have to give me this chance, but...I'm so grateful you have. I'll make it worth it I promise." I closed my eyes as he spoke, sighing with grief.
"Stevie? Dinner is- Oh." My eyes darted open as my mother surveyed our predicament. I greeted her beam with a steely expression.
"Lindsey, you're back early, how was your little boy?" Lindsey followed my mom into the kitchen, telling her every last detail about Will, making her laugh. After dinner, I found him on the back porch, fiddling with my acoustic.
"Pink suits you," I commented on the body's colour, startling him a little.
"I needed to play and this was the first thing I found. Ok?"
"I think that if you're staying here, you should find a studio."
"Are you sure?"
"It's no use you being cooped up here all day, but don't overwork yourself, I'm going to be needing your help."
"You aways have the best ideas."
"I know, goodnight." I half-smiled, retreating to my bedroom, considering whether my ideas really were all that good as I lay in bed alone.
~Have any of you guys figured out where in the world Stevie's new house is?~
