WARNING! THIS CHAPTER IS QUITE GRUESOME. WAIT FOR THE "&&&&&&&" TO READ THE PART AFTER THE BATTLE.

*****
The warriors of the pack were armed and ready at the pack's border. Blake, Christy, Liam and I stood tall and proud at the front line, ready to welcome the threat. We had split up the warriors to defend different parts of the border in case Leo decided to attack from different sides. There were hundreds of us.

I watched as Leo and Elise marched their pack towards us. My eyes flickered nervously towards the poker-faced Blake. The Lunar Pack must have joined forces with another one or two other packs. They had a lot of fighters. As they came closer, I noticed two things. One, their eyes were black and slightly glazed over. Two, the aura of death, despair and anguish radiated from the group like a beacon for disaster.

Warriors, be careful. The Lunar pack has grown about two times in size and have been possessed by the Levagairs, Blake's voice washed over the entire pack, warning us of what was to come. I felt a wave of anxiousness wash over the pack. The Levagairs have finally made their first move.

Leo and Elise lead the group with a sinister smile. They stopped about one hundred meters from our borders. "Hello, Kate. You look well." Leo chuckled darkly. "It would be a shame if I ripped off your pretty little head." Liam growled angrily at the threat and stepped closer to me.

Liam it's alright. We both know whose head will be ripped off, I said confidently. Leo's threat only empowered me. I was aching to slide my blade across his throat. Being possessed only gave me more reason to kill the whole pack. This pack had planted the seed of darkness within me, and it was about to sprout.

I knew we were supposed to protect the werewolf race, but this battle couldn't be prevented. The Levagairs were testing our strength and weakening us. A simple battle strategy, but it was effective. "We have a gift for you, Kate." Elise roughly threw a gift box that was tied closed by a silk ribbon. I looked at Christy who simply nodded her head, urging me to open the box. I took a deep breath and took off the lid.

Everything within me froze and my hands began to shake uncontrollably. I dropped the box and watched it roll out. "What is the meaning of this?!" Liam yelled furiously. He quickly pushed the decapitated head back into the box and out of my sight.

"Doctor Frank." I whispered hoarsely. "He was the only one who ever showed compassion towards me." The laughter of Leo and Elise watered the delicate seed of darkness and finally, it sprout. With an enraged cry, I sprinted towards the Lunar pack. I was deaf to the excited whoops and hollers from my pack as the battle begun, and I was blind to the faces I was slicing and impaling with my blades. I only had two true targets. Elise and Leo.

My knife was so slick with blood that it was hard to keep a firm grip on the handle. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Liam struggling with a large fighter from Lunar pack. I took my drenched blade and watched as it embedded itself deep into the skull of the fighter.

I felt a bone-crushing tackle throw me to the ground. I reached for my blade and kicked my opponent off my body. Tristan. The guard who helped me after the beating with James. His blonde hair looked red with the blood of my pack, my friends. His eyes were almost black and I could feel the distinct aura of death that seemed to cling to his soul.

Tristan lunged for me again, but I quickly flipped him facedown into the earth. Cautiously, I pressed my blade to the back of his neck. "Tristan, if you can hear me, stop. Please, I don't want to do this to you." I said. The feeling of guilt was quickly being numbed by Astrid. Kate, get up. He's gone. End him, Astrid said as the last strands of guilt disappeared.

I raised my blade with a blank face and drove it deep into his neck. Beneath me, Tristan spazzed and gurgled as the blood filled his esophagus. I silently watched as he began to still. Rest in peace old friend, I thought quietly.

My silent prayer was broken by the knife that flew through the air and dug itself into my rib cage. The deathly familiar burn of silver overwhelmed my nervous system. I collapsed to the ground and struggled to breath. It was against werewolf law to use silver in a battle. It would wipe out too many of us and we would risk extinction. I guess there were no rules now.

"Kate!" I heard Liam's enraged cry. He quickly snapped the neck of his opponent and began to slash through the bodies that stood in his way. Vivian shouted and a small group of warriors began to make clear the way for Liam to get to me. He scooped me up into his arms and began to run back to safe haven. The pack house.

"Saviour mate down! Kate needs help! Someone get Doctor Tori!" Liam yelled to a group of frightened, but determined adolescent pack warriors. They nodded firmly and soon, Tori came in running.

"Place her flat on this stretcher and move! She's losing blood fast. Go, go!" Tori ordered. Her loud voice echoed in my ears and my vision began to blur. Liam, if I don't make it, avenge me. Kill Leo and Elise. Win this war for me, I mind-linked Liam. You are not dieing on me. Not now, not ever. You'll make it, he replied, but the uncertainty was clear in his voice.

I could feel Tori prodding the wound and examining the depth. "Good news and bad news. Kate's wound is fatal. The silver knife is grazing her heart. It would take an eight hour long surgery to remove it, and she doesn't have that amount of time." Tori said gravely.

"Good news?" Liam demanded as he took my hand into his.

"You can save her by bonding her to you. Your mark will kickstart a do or die instinct in Astrid, Kate's wolf. She will be able to draw onto your wolf, Julius's strength and it will help her stay alive long enough for me to perform the surgery." Tori responded unaware of the vision the Moon Goddess gave Liam. I was doomed to be set against him if he were to mark me.

Liam paled and began the pace the room. "I'll do it. Give me the room please." Tori nodded.

"Hurry, she doesn't have much time." Tori said as she shut the door. Liam pulled a chair beside the hospital bed I was laying on and took my hands.

"Little warrior, are you okay with his?" He asked. My eyes began to flutter close as I nodded weakly. "The vision is not set in stone. We have been strengthening our minds to become resilient to possession and communication. Even Blake can't force his mind-link into our brains if we don't want him to. I believe we can do this. We will live on together, we must."

Liam's determination and love filled me with warmth and I believed his every word. We would get through this. Together. There was no way in hell I was going to hurt him. Liam's eyes darkened and his canine's extended. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. His teeth slid into the spot between my shoulder and neck. I could feel the pattern of the mark begin to dance its way across my skin. It didn't hurt at all.

The pain from the knife began to dull and I could feel Astrid fighting harder than ever to keep me alive. I could feel her extra strength from Julius already. Liam pulled away and I could see his own mark beginning to form. "Tori! Come in, she's ready." Liam kissed my hand. "I love you, Kate." The last thing I saw was Tori sanitizing her surgical tools and pushing Liam out of the room.
