He immediately turns his head to me. "What!?"
'Don't you see it?!' I respond as I look incomprehensible in his eyes. I turn my head to the window again. But the surprise hits me when I don't see the person anymore. 'Someone was right there, against the window! I swear!'
Then he chuckles. "I wish, I really needed a refill after this one" He says as he shakes his mug.
~There is really no way to reason with him, is there?~
'I'm serious, Zach!' I angrily make clear.
A sigh leaves Zach. "Fine, I'll check it out". He steps out of the car and walks to the point he vanishes in the darkness outside.
The seconds that feel like minutes make me sit back in the chair and think for a while. ~Am I really going crazy, or am I just tired of all things that has happened~ I wonder. Also some words Alyssa had said earlier keep reliving in my mind.
---"You shouldn't have come.. he will kill me if he finds out you two are here! After what I've done to him.." ---
~Why? What did she do to Zach that made her so afraid of him?~
I slowly sink into minutes of deep thoughts but a bang against the window at my side heavily gets me out of it in just one second. I promptly turn my head to the window as reflex and almost bump my head in the meantime. My heart speeds up to 100 times per second as I slowly move myself to the rear seat. At the moment my back reaches the backrest I have no choice but to watch what is going to happen.
Suddenly the door where I sat opens up, but there is no one to be seen. I immediately close my eyes and cower as I anxiously wait to the moment something will happen. Out of the bitter quietness I hear a familiar laugh: Zach. I slowly open my eyes and startle when I see he is sitting right next to me, to the left. The emotions, mostly anger, are overwhelming me which makes me do the first thing that pops up in my mind. I make a fist of my hand and rapidly try to hit him. Unfortunately his quick reflexes are one step ahead of me.
'Let go of me!' I yell at the moment I feel he is holding my fist in such way that it hurts.
He looks sharp into my eyes "Don't ever do that again" He clarifies.
I move a little sidewards when I see his eyes turn black.
He quickly looks away and stares outside the window on the left. After a few minutes of silence he steps out of the car and takes a seat in the driver's seat. Then he turns his head to me again. "I didn't had to lash out on you, but it's just really annoying when you try to hit me". He turns back and looks forward. "You can sit in the front again, if you want" He adds.
I remain silent and decide to not sit next to him because I don't really feel worthy of sitting next to him anymore..
~Shall I ask him about Alyssa? But what if he doesn't want to talk about it and lashes out again?~ I wonder.
After half an hour of wondering wheter to ask him about Alyssa or not, I finally decide to just ask.
'Can I ask something?'
"Sure". He responds.
'What happened between you and Alyssa?'
He momentarily looks at me and then to the front window again. "She sold me out".
'How?' I continue.
He grabs something from the back seat as he looks to the road. "Here" he says as he hands me over a piece of damaged old-fashioned paper. "read it yourself".
I immediately notice the formal way of writing, but that was probably a requirement back then.
Sept. 24th, 1842
Dear Zacharias,
It has been erstwhile since I hath wrought. Betraying you hath made me feel dreadful about myself and I shall never forgive my deed to dispose thee to thine beloved one, Nathalie. Therefore I am
apologizing. So I beseech thee to
forgive me.Sincerely yours,
Alyssiana Beverly Hilton
When I'm done reading the letter I look at Zach. 'In what manner did she betray you? Because I can't quite infer that from this letter'
"In 1838 Alyssa exposed what I was to the woman I loved back then, Nathalie. She didn't even know about the existence of vampires yet, but her family on the contrary, did. Their hatred for vampires was pure".
I look thoughtful to the letter. 'What happened next?'
He sighs. "Look, it's nothing important"
'Please, Zach' I insist.
"I said no, Mandy. OK?"
I nod understandingly and sit back.
30 minutes of silent road-tripping gone by. I immediately get a déjà vu when he drives up my driveway for the second time again...
'Thank you again' I say from the back seat.
He turns his head to me. "You're welcome"
'See you later then..' I step out of the car and walk towards the front door. Then I go upstairs and open my room's door. But a surprise hits me. 'Alissa?!'
"Hi Mandy" She neutrally says as she sits on my bed.
When I look at her face expression I notice something is wrong..
'What are you doing here at..'. I put on my phone and look at the time. '9:55?'
"I just wanted to check if you are OK". She says as she stands up from my bed.
"And there's something I need to tell you.. Something urgent". She adds as she looks anxious at me.
~Something urgent? What does she mean?!~
I look strange at her. 'What?! What is it, Alissa?!'
