Solanum

'NO!' Mason!' I yell as I see him lying on the ground in the hall, looking dead. I run towards him and see he doesn't breath anymore. He's just lying there, in a puddle of blood.

Zach walks to Mason too, observing him. "Don't worry". He calmly says. "He isn't actually dead".

I turn my head up to Zach, who is standing next to me. 'What do you mean he isn't dead?! He looks dead to me' I say, desperate and angry.

"Relax, he's a vampire remember? When he dies you'll know it". He says, probably to calm me down. "Someone bled him out".

I remain quiet and look while Zach is walking away. A few minutes later he comes back with some kind of mug and bends down next to Mason and in front of me. He puts the mug to Mason's mouth and pours the content, which I later notice is blood, in it.

Then I notice the black color coming up into Mason's eyes and subsequently opens them. Zach removes the mug and watches as Mason is sitting up.

"I need more". Mason insists greedy, yet weak.

"Easy hard drinker". Zach neutrally says. "Go get your own".

Mason gets up from the ground and looks at me, his eyes turning a little black. "You're bleeding"

I startle and look at my left arm, which is indeed bleeding. It must have happened at the mill.. I see Mason is looking straight into my eyes, his eyes turning even more black now.

Just as Mason is walking at me in a threatening way, Zach interferes by protectively standing right in front of me.

It seems to not bother Mason at all, because he rapidly comes at me. Luckily Zach is there for me and pushes him away, grabbing him by his shoulders. "Stop!" Zach loudly makes clear.

At the moment Zach seems to have Mason's conscious attention, he continues talking. "Look at what you are trying to do to her". He says and looks at me.

Mason looks startled at me, his black eyes slowly fading away. "I'm so sorry Mandy.. I- I don't know what came over me!"

I still stare at Mason, anxiously. Is this his second personality?

"Mason.." Zach says. "I think you've been injected by Solanum"

I turn confused to Zach. 'Solanum?'. When I turn my head to Mason again, I notice he's surprised too.

"Yes, Solanum". Zach clarifies. "The herb makes vampires rabid, and they desiccate faster".

When I hear what Zach says, I walk over to him, knowing it is the safest place to be right now.

"That makes you unpredictable for the next 24 hours". Zach adds.

But Mason shakes his head. "No, I'll be fine. I can control it'. He makes clear, desperate".

"You should better go now, Mandy. But not to your house, he has already been there. Stay the night at Alissa's".

I nod and walk to the front door. But before I know, Mason stands right in front of me. I startle, but keep my chin up 'Mason, you can fight this! Just don't give in to it'. I encourage, trying to get his normal-self back.

But in vain...

His eyes turn black again and he comes closer.

Zach rapidly runs over in a speed I can't keep up, and stands right in front of me again. "I wouldn't do that". Zach warns, looking straight into Mason's eyes.  Then Zach turns to me, his eyes getting black too, which makes me startle. "Go now, Mandy". He says, protecting.

I turn around and open the door, but when I look back, I see Mason stabbed Zach with some kind of metal. Zach is falling to the ground, groaning of pain. I want to run towards him to help, but Mason grabs me before I could even take three steps. Everything speeds up now, the sense of time fades away as Mason's eyes turn black and starts feeding from me, without blinking. I start to see things blurry and feel myself slipping away, losing strength.
