This AU belongs to Dregonrider5, and she came up with the story! I just wanted to write about it! Ask her for more information about it! HERE IS THE AMAZINGNESS!!! (Sorry, I really like this AU if you can't tell.)
A skeleton stood alone, leaning against the dark bark of a pine. Trees loomed above him threateningly, without the comfort of emerald leaves, branches sharpened to the tip. Despite being underground, white fluffyness blanketed the ground below him, only disturbed by his footprints. There was no animals, no sign of life anywhere...
He kept his face lowered, so it was hard to see his eyesockets. His golden and blue jacket stuck out against the colorless world. He had black basketball shorts with a bright yellow stripe going down either side. However, most notably, where his hands were supposed to be were two gigantic skulls of a terrifying beast. No wonder he was slightly stooped, it must have been hard carrying those... things around.
Sans let out a long breath; clouding the air in front of him. He slid slowly down the side of the tree until he hit the bottom. The clearly depressed skeleton sat there for a few moments, his makeshift hands braced below him. He gazed at his disformed limb attached to him, then gradually unraveled the humongous blaster.
Between the large jaws and razor teeth, was a pile of tiny particles. Sans' shoulders began to shake dangerously, and soon he erupted into tears; making little paths down his skull.
It's all my fault... Memories flashed across the mourning skeleton's vision, and suddenly he was back in the lab...
Alarms were blaring, doors shutting down, and the overwhelming sound of shouting voices; a lockdown. Panic was unfloding. The skelebros were hiding under a table, where they presumed they be safest. Sans remembered Papyrus wrapping his arms tightly around him, his body trembling with his own. It made him feel better.
Then, a recognizable scientist slipped into the room, panting heavily. Dr. Gaster hunched over; coughing and spluttering red dots all over the floor. Dust stained his normally pure as night robes. Sans' heartbeat rushed through his chest.
"Dad?!? Are you okay!?!" Papyrus cried out, reaching out a quivering small arm to help. Papyrus quickly crawled out of the hiding place. Sans didn't move, no, he couldn't. If Gaster died, where would they...
"I'm fine, I'm fine." Sans sighed with relief. However, Wing Dings raised his head up...
His face was completely cracked. One of his eyes appeared to melting out of it's sockets. Sans gasped, jumping backwards; bumping his head in the process. He rubbed it absentmindedly, focusing on the immediate and bigger problem.
"Dad?! What happened to y-your face?" Papyrus touched it tentatively, but jerked his hand back when Gaster hissed. Gaster glared at his youngest son, his eyesockets flaring weakly.
"Don't touch it!" He searched the crack along his skull, flinching. "I don't know what has happened, but promise me something, please."
Sans manged to weave himself to his father's side, next to his brother. He clasped Papyrus' hand and gave him what he hoped was a comforting look. Then, they both turned to Wing Dings anxiously.
"Do not leave this lab. This is the only place were you will not be affected by this... substance." Gaster's voice was completely serious and demanding. Sans never heard him sound like that before. Papyrus whimpered like a stray dog.
Gaster glanced at them deadbeat in the eyes, and Sans had the uncomfortable feeling that he was staring straight into his soul. "You will not survive if you come into contact with this energy. It's uncontrollable. In fact, I advise you not to come near me or any of my other coworkers. We cannot risk you two catching these possible disease. It is known to kill. I have already seen what it is capable of." Gaster took Sans roughly by the wrist, and spoke in a faltering tone. "I repeat, do not go outside. It will be a very long time before this area is uncontaminated, so don't get any ideas." Gaster had a vulnerable facial expression for a second, then whipped his head to the shrill scream that echoed throughout the lab.
"Remember what I said." The scientist cautioned before taking off out the door and down the hallway. Sans hugged himself, trying to hide how shaken he was by the older skeleton's warning.
Soon, however, life was seemingly back to the usual schedule. Sans grew to be very interested in what had happened that day. However, the staff refused to talk about the incident when Sans asked them, even Wing Dings. Although, the scientist tried to keep it a secret, Sans spied on his father long enough to gather a few things.
The material, they decided to call it "Hyper Energy", somehow swept through the Underground. This "Hyper Energy" was extremely dangerous, and murdered many of the monsters in the laboratory. In spite of that, the survivors gained strange markings and even mutations in some cases.
Sans was eager to know more and had many unanswered questions about this mythical slaughterer. How did it come to the Underground? Can you contain it? Why was there some monsters that didn't get butchered, and some that did? What is this "Hyper Energy"?
That was not the only reason he agreed when Papyrus suggested to go outside. He also agreed because he loved his brother, and couldn't stand to see him so unhappy cooped up in the workshop.
"I want to be out there, Sans!" The pumped skeleton constantly declared. "I need to catch a human, and become Captain of the Royal Guard! Nyeh heh heh!" Papyrus cackled with glee. This was just the thing to stop sudden sadness that overtook the juvenile skeleton.
Sans held tightly to Papyrus' smaller hand, listening to Papyrus chatter excitedly about what they were about to see. "I bet there would be many friends I can make out there, and they will play with me because I am great..." Sans shook his head fondly. Isn't my brother the coolest? He thought to himself with a chuckle.
Creak... The door opened reluctantly on it's rusty, unused hinges. It revealed a unfamiliar landscape of magma and red hot rocks. Hotland; Gaster talked about it once. A unwelcome feeling of foreboding flooded his body. Is this really a good idea?
"Yaaaayyy!" Papyrus shrieked and bolted out the doorway out into the terrain beyond. He threw his arms up with delight, and did a perfect cartwheel. He posed with his hands on his hips; giving his signature "Nyeh heh heh!" before dashing around some more.
"Papyrus! Wait for me!" Sans shuddered the sinster notion away. He dashed into the bright rocks and kicking away some cinders. He smiled down at the floor; enjoying the feeling of freedom and fresh air. He looked up and around to see were his brother was.
Sans froze. Papyrus was just standing there, trembling and eyes wide. Papyrus turned his head to gaze at him. It was tearstained and contorted with pain.
"Papy! What's wrong?" No... wait! Sans sprinted toward his brother, but tripped over a rock and hit the dust. A burning fire of pain crashed into the skeleton. It ripped through his chest and tingled in his skull like migraine times one hundred. Sans gritted his teeth and closed his eyesockets. Sans felt cold tears against his skull; and gripped the rocks like they were a lifesaver.
Suddenly, something dropped in with the pain. The energy rushed through Sans; and tore the pain away. Sans hicupped as he pushed himself to his knees. He gasped for air in the smokey world, until he finally got his bearings.
No...no no no no! Sans hopped to his feet, and ran toward a pile of white dust. He slid and ended up right in front of it. He reached a hand out...
What? My hand... Sans glared at the Gaster Blaster glued to his arms. He pointed it to the ground, and thought about one word. Fire.
It blasted at least three feet hole; steam climbing into the air in it's wake. His storm of anger disappeared and he fell to his knees. He glanced at the blaster, it's blue eye blinking up at him.
My brother... I'm alone. I'm a monster.
