"Uh... um oh, um..." I stuttered, failing my arms around in a failed attempt to fly out of this conversation. I'm the one asking questions, not him!
"Come on, tell me." He said in a more pleasant tone. "Sorry 'bout that, but I just want to know you more while you're asking these questions. Is this for a student project? Or... something else I'm not thinking of?"
"Y-yes!" I pounced; feeling relief course through my limbs. "I'm doing this for a project at school! Since magic is such a new concept, I thought I might get some extra points if I got a interview with an actual monster!" I smiled. I was convinced he bought that.
"Huh." He nodded, his expression not changing one bit. "That's cool." Maybe I was wrong? Was he still suspicious? Perhaps I'm just being paranoid...
But I don't want to tell him I'm a Werecat... My Uncle told my specifically not to tell anyone.
It might be good, though... to get it off my chest...
Danielle! What are you thinking? I smacked the side of my head in annoyance. Stay smart and focus! I don't even know this guy-!
"Hey, uh... what do you want to eat?" I blinked to see Grillby has brought us our drinks and was waiting patiently for my order.
"Oh! I-I want a, uh, burger!" I stated lamely, doing an inward cringe. This is why you can't let your mind wander!
"That doesn't sound too bad. Grillbz, I'll have what she's having." Sans winked and the fire monster left.
"Sans, this doesn't really pertain to my assignment, but why do you have ketchup instead of a drink?" I gestured to the ruby condiment in front of him. He chuckled and lifted it up.
"This is my drink." What?
"You can't drink ketchup!" I aruged disbelievingly.
"Who gives you the right to judge?" Sans spoke with a strange tone.
I halted; my mouth hanging open dumbly as he took a large swig of his so called "drink". I-I... didn't expect... what am I supposed to say to that?! Whatever, just contuine with your questions...
I gathered myself; straightening my posture and smoothing down my short hair. I shook off the stunned slience and warning feeling.
"Sans..." I began. The skeleton cocked his skull at me.
".... Who is going to pay, for all of this...?" Ugh, curly jams, why?
Sans grinned and placed his ketchup down. "You offering?" The skeleton asked, snickering.
I gapped at him again, to my incredible frustration. Sometimes, I can't tell if he's joking, or...? He is the weirdest person I met, period.
"Just kidding; I'll pay." He flicked at his container of crimson liquid. "You have something to ask me?" His eyesockets did not leave the ketchup.
Is he trying to keep something from me? Is that why he isn't meeting my gaze? "Oh, yeah, sorry. So... can magic be used to change your appearance?" I bit my lip and awaited for his reaction.
Sans tensed and looked up at me, then away. His fingers started to tap as he scanned the restaurant importantly. He is trying to come up with a lie, isn't he? I felt a rush of outrage. Why can't you give me this little bit of information? I have a right to know!
"Hey, Grillbz's here. That was fast." Not fast enough for you, huh? I narrowed my eyes at him, but quickly fixed my mistake. I can't chase him away now! I need to know more!
Grillby set down a burger in front of me, then gave Sans another one with a amused chuckle. "This is human food, you know. Are you sure?"
"Oh yeah, hot stuff. I'm positive it won't be bunbearable." Sans laughed while Grillby hurried off; giggling himself.
"I don't mean to pry, but what's up with you and Grillby?" I inquired, watching him closely. Just as I thought, his shoulders relaxed and he raised a eyebrow.
"You ask a lot of questions. We're just friends, don't worry." He drank some more of his weird choice of beverage.
"What do Grillby mean by 'human food'?" I asked, this time just because I was curious.
"Well, monster food is used more to fuel magic energy, since it's made from magic itself. That's usually why we eat so fast, it's easy to absorb." He picked up the delicious burger, studying it. "Human food obviously isn't made by magic, but is still able to fill us up, you know?"
I nodded in understanding. "Why aren't you eating monster food then?"
"Not in the mood." He spoke smoothly, but I fancied I saw him flinch at little.
Don't upset him! Plus, this is really off topic. "Back to the subject at hand, how do you control magic? How do you release it?"
"Heh. You see, it's something that you learn. I don't think I can teach you."
Yes, you can! You have too! I crossed my arms for a moment, then dug in to my juicy patty.
Yum! The bun was so crisp, the lettuce so crunchy, and the meat soooo smoky. Yet, not to smoky, either. Just perfect. For once, the tomato was not over powering, like how Jessy grilled his burgers.
Sans smirked at me as I relished the taste. "Heh heh. It's pretty good, right?"
"Mmmm hmmm!" I replied with a mouth full of heaven. He chortled as I swallowed and angels started to sing.
"Hallelujah." I muttered; and was rewarded with more twitters from Sans. At least it's better than him making the jokes... No coffee spilling this time!
Despite this, Sans still looked uncomfortable. During the entirety of lunch, he stayed ominously quiet. Does he have some place to go? He shifted around awkwardly then flipped his sleeve up to glance at his watch.
"Hey, what time is it?" He jumped, but exhaled in relief when he saw me.
"It's, uh, 1:47." He kept his eyes on his previously hidden watch.
"Wow, time flies, eh?" I said, suprised by the answer. I leaned back with a contented sigh. I didn't expect for it to last this long, maybe one hour, tops...
"And time for me to go." He heaved himself out of the classy booth and took a step toward the door.
"Wait! I-I'm not done!" Frying biscuits...
I leaped out of my chair and grasped his wrist. He gasped, then whipped around to face me. I let go hastily, and cleared my throat at his bewildered face.
"I'm s-sorry, but I mean that my interview wasn't done, and..." I trailed off. This is stupid, just let him go.
