Asriel Dreemur stepped toward the golden gates. He drank the scene in hungrily, the individual runes and jewels attached the towering walls; stretching high to the ceiling, and the large doors, bolted close.
His paw traveled to his neck automatically. He fingered a small locket, then raised it close to his muzzle.
He spoke softly into it, "Chara. You better know what you are doing."
Of course. Their voice rang clear and true in his mind, soothing and kind. Just step outside the barrier, Asriel, you'll love the surface.
Asriel let the necklace fall. He took another step toward the imposing walls, gleaming like a polished piece of metal, despite the dimness of the Underground. He pressed a humongous paw to its surface.
Energy coursed powerfully through his hand and vibrated up his arm. He smiled as the rush of magic faded.
You fool. The gate hissed, layered in multiple voices. Asriel jumped in surprise. Incidentally, Asriel was reminded of something his mother told him,
"Asriel. Promise me, no matter what Chara says... don't go near the queen's kingdom. And never ever approach that gate." Toriel had instructed him.
Asriel shoved away a pang of sour guilt. This was for his mother, and for everyone trapped down here.
You are not pure enough. The gate sounded disgusted. You haven't even opened the rest of the gates, monster. Why did you come here?
Asriel glanced at the door. Upon it's surface, surrounded by intricate designs, seven heart-shaped indentations were marked upon it's surface. The hollow clefts all stayed dark.
The gate's disembodied collection of nightmarish voices resumed, You have not a soul to give us. Begone, scum.
Then, the voices paused. Unless... A presence suddenly pressed down on his soul, squeezing out the air from his lungs.
Traitor! The gate roared. Pain exploded behind his eyelids. How dare you hide yourself, child! In one of their kind, no less!
Asriel cried out as the agony swelled, stabbing into his mind. He fell, trembling, to his knees. His vision swam and tipped, until he wasn't even sure if he was staring at the ground or the ceiling.
"Help!" He called weakly.
Black spots dotted and danced at his peripherals. Some part of him was vanishing, slipping from his grasp.
Then, he spotted it. A glowing, ruby-ish light. He couldn't focus on it, but his mind told him what it was. Or, who it was.
No. "No," Asriel couldn't bring himself to believe it. Surely... "No!" The gate was stealing Chara.
The gate sniffed. Nothing like this should exist. YOU shouldn't exist. It's monstrous. A abomination.
"Give... them back!" Asriel gasped.
I'm just cleaning away what shouldn't exist. The voices persisted their in torture. Listen well, if you can.
A human soul and monster soul shouldn't mingle with each other. One needs to eradicated in order for us to survive. The gate finished, their tone sounding like a guillotine sliding to end a life.
Asriel's soul sank. Their plan had failed. Now... what's going to happen to us?
Asriel wrapped his fingers around his locket. The pulses of warmth washed all his discomfort away. He only wanted to protect his friend. His human sibling.
He curled into a ball. He waited for something to happen. Anything. He allowed himself to soak into his suffering.
"Chara..." He whispered.
They were already gone.
