When I step in Albert's room I see him seated on his bed.
"Hey," I tell him and he looks up with worried eyes.
"Hey." His voice is so soft and low.
"I'm so sorry, Albert. I know I overreacted, I understand you need to have your own space-"
"Emily, please let me talk." He looks at me with a dark haunted gaze. "Sit, please." I nod as he makes a gesture for me to sit.
"Before I tell you anything about my past, you need to know that I don't expect you to stay with me after this. I don't want you to look at me with pity nor do I need it. I want you to stay with me because you love me and not because you feel the need to feel sorry for me." I want to tell him I love him and that's the main reason why I will always stay, no matter what, but I choose to just nod so he can keep talking.
I can see his hands shaking on his lap and I know he's nervous to tell me what has been haunting him for so many years. I lay my hand on his and give him a reassuring smile for him to continue.
"My dad died because of me, Emily."
