Alone

"Where are all the people?" resumed the little prince at last. "It's a little lonely in the desert..."
"It is lonely when you're among people, too." said the snake.

-Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Why is it among men we feel alone and why is it that we're so terrified of being alone?Alone no one will point out the things we like about ourselves. We can't reassure ourselves of our importance alone. We need to be validated that we are here and being adequately addressed. But among people they may point out the things we dislike. They may realize the things we are most afraid of finding if we sit alone, digging. They may not address us and we may find we are not as important as we convinced ourselves. But if we are alone, then we may find the things we hide from ourselves and no one will comfort us from ourselves. We are our worst enemy. If we met ourselves, would we like them? Alone, do we like the thoughts we have?  Among people, are we the same as the person we find in solitude? Among men we are so lonely I find. In a crowd we fidget. We want to fit and blend in as we do among those close to our hearts. And somehow we find that when we don't blend we feel more alone because we shouldn't feel alone. The fact that we are where we crave in solitude and yet no more fulfilled terrifies us. What if the points we want to reach will continue to feel inadequate?  What will we do then?  But when we're alone, who are we so afraid of finding?
