I hugged him tightly. I had missed him so much. We walked back to the table together and I introduced him to all of my friends.
Steve: I know all of them. Especially this young lady right here.
He patted Grace on the back and she blushed.
Me: I don't even want to know.
Steve: No no it's nothing like that. I trained her at boot camp. The rest of them I know from my years as a SEAL.
Me: Oh ok. So what's new?
Steve: Well Danny picked up drinking. He hardly talks. He never goes out. He cries himself to sleep. Rachel and Stan died in a car crash so he has all 4 kids full time now.
It was all I could do not to cry. I hated myself for leaving and making everyone think I was dead.
Steve: And Catherine and I broke up. I caught her with one of her exes.
Me: Well when was that?
Steve: About a month ago.
Me: And you're still single? Steve McGarrett? THE Steve McGarrett hasn't gotten back up on his horse?
Steve: Well I've been busy...
Me: Yeah. Sure.
After dinner, Steve went to the barrack that Lee, Jason, and James were in. I went back to the on that Calleigh, Grace, and I shared. Technically, lights out was 10, but us girls liked to quietly talk about our love life. Calleigh and I were both married and there wasn't much to tell about our husbands so we got our joy out of listening to Grace's crush of the week. We eventually turned it into a gameshow of sorts. Calleigh and I drew a composite figure. We had to ask yes or no questions about what the guy looked like. Then we would change the features in the sketch to match what Grace said. Sometimes it was hard sometimes it was easy. I really needed it tonight though, a break from seriousness. I was so stressed about the mission and when Steve showed up it made it 10 times worse because of what he told me about Danny. Finally, after we had showered and changed into our pajamas, we began the game.
Calleigh: Is he tall?
Grace: Yes.
Me: Is he blonde?
Grace: No.
Calleigh: Jawline?
Grace: Yep. Sharp enough to cut a frozen turkey.
Me: You're weird.
Calliegh: Oh my God Grace! For real?
Grace: no he couldn't actually cut a frozen turkey with it. It's called exaggerating Cal.
Calleigh: No not that. I know who it is.
Me: Who is it Cal?
Calleigh: If I'm right you know him really well. I mean really really well.
Me: Oh my God Grace! Is it Steve?
Grace turned red and Calleigh burst into laughter.
Grace: It's not funny Cal!
Me: Well he is back on the market. Maybe I could help you out a little. I doubt he'll do it until after the mission but I'll still talk to him.
Grace: You'd do that for me?
Me: Of course!
Calliegh: Ok I hate to have to be the adult here but it's late and if I remember right, you have to get up an hour before we do, Jesse.
Me: You're right we should hit the sack.
