Last Day Of Summer
"Today is the day, Aren't you excited?" Mya asked as we walked down to the garden where everyone was. Parents, Professors and people who waited to find out who got the jobs or money.
"I'm definitely excited, But don't you wonder how it will be when we get out of here?"
"Not really, That's why we weren't supposed to get close. So if we don't see each other again it'll be fine"
"You didn't get close with anyone?" I asked and she shrugged. It's true Mya hasn't really been here and we all know she's most likely not gonna get the job in publishing and us seeing her again won't happen.
"I'll talk to you later" Mya said leaving. I watched her jump on some guy who looked like he was in his late twenties or maybe older.
I ignored it and kept walking. That's not my place to talk about it.
"Look at the beautiful girl" Zach said and I laughed seeing him and Maurice wearing identical suits.
"You two look like twins"
"Well that was the whole point, Not to mention we've arrived together and we're going to leave together, Right Mitchell"
"Right Bradley, Baby you look amazing" Maurice said kissing my cheek.
"Thank you so much, Have you decided on what we should say during our speech?"
"Well I know we have to read a portion of our book that effected us the most. I highly doubt reading the pranks is a good idea"
I nodded as Gabriel called everyone to the Garden. Zach grabbed my left hand and Maurice grabbed my right as we walked to the seats on the stage and sat down.
"This year's college internship was all about helping prodigies find their call in life and actually express their talents. That's what has been done and I'm proud. This year the kids who improved the most get 534,000 dollars"
Everyone clapped and he smiled. "Alright enough, Before we get further into announcements we've been honored with a speech from the two most youngest and brilliant writers I've met. Give a round of applause for Maurice and Faith"
We stood up and went towards the microphone as everyone looked at us waiting for us to speak.
I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out. I couldn't speak. Why can't I speak? My mouth dried and my hands started sweating.
The one day I get stage fright.
"My girlfriend and I have spent our time here finding the right muse to help us actually come up with a way to sum up with how we felt. Well I think that the entire point of this was to finally live. Rather it's taking all the baggage of your family and leaving it at home or it's healing," He said while looking at me. "From the pain at home and the only way to get over it is to make something for yourself"
I wanted to speak but I couldn't. This isn't how I expected this to play out.
"Another thing is to have fun" Zach said taking the mic. "Fun is meant to be shared with people you love and I love my friends. I love both of them and it shows this internship brought three different lives together and made them all understand each others plans, Right Faith?"
I cleared my throat. " When I came here this was a snob on a mission. That's how I felt. Like a puppet who only knew how to be sophisticated and only focus on her work nothing more or nothing less. Now I feel happier. I feel stupid ease and I feel like I finally have a reason. A reason to love" I said looking at Maurice and he squeezed my hand as Zach grabbed the other hand.
"We're happy to have been here and look forward to the faces who make a difference next year"
* * *
"That was so embarrassing" I said as I took a sip of my water.
"No it wasn't, Stage fright is a common thing"
"Yeah and besides we're gonna be together after this. Mind as well embarrass yourself for the first time in front of us"
"Going to" Maurice corrected.
"Do you seriously want to have this conversation again?"
They were about to start arguing when Gabriel came back to announce who got the jobs.
"Now that all the fun has been had." He said and no one laughed so he carried on. "Well I'm proud to introduce the scholarships"
We watched as name by name from each profession was announced. Like in slow motion as people stood up and cheered we clapped but not excitingly not until we hear who we wanted.
"For the music profession we have Blair Underwood, And last but not least Zachary Bradley"
We cheered for him and he smiled then jumped up snatching the paper out of Gabriel's hand.
"I got the job!" He yelled over the microphone and we laughed at him as he ran back to us.
"Good job" I laughed.
"This has been an amazing tale by far I'm the most happiest"
"And now for the money, Everyone has been very excited and nervous on this opportunity waiting to see who finally gets the money and I'm glad to announce this year it's my two most prized possessions"
Is this it? Did we finally get the money? Not that it's what this has all come up to but this is an exciting and monumental event.
"Maurice Mitchell and Faith Gonzalez"
We Jumped up grabbing the check that was bigger then the both of us.
I looked at Zach who was clapping and signalled for him to come over.
All three of us stood there, Holding the money with one thought that I knew was on all of our minds.
What's going to happen once all this is over?
