Chapter 53

"But it's a trick." Clint stated twirling a drumstick. 

It was after the party but us the avengers with the exception of Rhodey, Maria and Dr. Cho were all sitting around. 

"No, no, it's much more than that." Thor said.

"Ah, whosoever be he worthy shall haveth the power." Clint said mimicking it. "Whatever, man. It's a trick." Thor laughed before gesturing towards his hammer.

"Please, be my guest."

"Come, on." I said.

"Really?" Clint set the drumstick down before standing up.

"Oh, this is gonna to be beautiful." Rhodey commented.

"Clint, you've had a tough week. We won't hold it against you if you can't get it up." Tony stated.  We all laughed.

"You know I've seen this before, right?" Clint said to Thor before tugging on the handle but the hammer didn't budge. "I still don't know how you do it."

"Smell the silent judgement?" Tony asked.

"Please, Stark, by all mean." Clint says. I got up from Tony's lap as he stood.

"Uh, oh."

"Never one to shrink from an honest challenge." Tony stated.

"Get after it."

"It's physics." Tony said putting the strap around his wrist.

"Physics." Bruce said in disbelief.

"Right, so, if I lift it, I then rule Asgard?" Tony asked Thor.

"Yes, of course."

"I will be reinstituting prima nocta." I rolled my eyes. He tugged on it but it didn't budge. Tony took the strap off. "Be right back."

A few minutes later he came back with part of his Iron man suit on. It still didn't budge. Rhodey got part of the War Machine suit on as they tried together.

"Are you even pulling?" Rhodey asked Tony.

"Are you on my team?"

"Just represent. Pull."

"All right let's go.

I just shook my head. 

Bruce went up next. With both feet on the table he tugged as hard as he can before stepping off and pretending he was the hulk. No one laughed.

Steve stood up.

"Come on, Cap." I said as Steve walked over. 

He pulled on it and to my surprise I saw it move but he couldn't lift it.

"Widow? Ana?" Tony asked. I just shook my head before taking a sip of my beer.

"Oh, no, no. Tat's not a question I need answered." Natasha stated.

"All deference to the Man Who Wouldn't Be King, but it's rigged." Tony stated.

"You bet your ass." Clint stated walking past Tony.

"Steve, he said  a bad language word." Maria stated.

"Did you tell everyone about that?" Steve asked Tony embarrassed. 

"The handle's imprinted, right? Like a security code." Tony asked Thor ignoring Steve's question. "'Whosoever is carrying Thor's fingerprints,' is, I think, the literal translation."

Yes. It's a very, very interesting theory." Thor stated standing up. "I have a simpler one." He said picking the hammer up with ease. "You're all not worthy." We all groaned.

A high pitched noise resounded around the room. I cover my ears.

I looked up and saw a broken Iron Legion bot.

"How could you be worthy?" It asked. "You're all killers.

"Stark." Steve said.

"Jarvis." Tony said.

"I'm sorry, I was asleep. Or I was a-dream."

"Reboot Legionnaire OS. We got a buggy suit."

"There was this terrible noise. And I was tangled in...in strings. I had to kill the other guy. He was a good guy."

"You killed someone?" I asked the buggy suit.

"Wouldn't have been my first call. But, down in the real world, we're faced with ugly choices." It responded.

"Who sent you?" Thor asked.

"I see a suit of armor around the world." I heard Tony's voice play.

"Ultron." Bruce stated in realization.

"In the flesh. Or, no, not yet. Not this chrysalis. But I'm ready. I'm on a mission." Maria stood up with her gun ready.

"What mission?"  Nat asked.

"Peace in our time." Then iron legion suits flew and began to attack us.

A low growl escaped my lips as I grabbed one of the bots and sliced off its arm with my hand. It kicked me back into the window. Surprisingly it didn't break. But it was cracked. The bot flew at me and I quickly grabbed it and smashed it into the ground to pieces. Another flew at me hitting my side. 

The window crashed and wind blew harshly against me. A gasp escaped me as I fell farther down from the building.
