Why were there so many people at the airport around midnight?

Evanee had just gotten there and was swamped by crowd of people and luggages lying around. She pushed through people, apologizing with every step. She had to check the next few flights.

Once she made it to the board, she saw that the next flight to Toronto was in half an hour. People might have already been boarding.

"Evan!" She called out, searching frantically.

People turned their heads to look at her.

"Evan Fong! Has anyone seen a stupid Canadian man?" She shouted, her eyes starting to tear up.

As much as she hated him sometimes, he was still Evan. He was still the guy who showed her that there more to life, who introduced her to her best friends. He tried to get better and for the most part, he kind of did. Evanee couldn't say goodbye to him now.

Though, it seemed pointless now. There couldn't have been enough time. There were too many people, too much noise, too many problems. Evanee couldn't help but stop completely in the crowd of people. Tears began streaming down her face.

Tonight had already been hell.

He must have left already. The flight should be taking off in a few minutes.
This shouldn't have happened. Evan shouldn't have broken up with Sydney and he shouldn't have left.

Slowly, she trudged through the crowd of pitiful looks and kind smiles sent her way from strangers. Evanee wanted to smile back, but it seemed impossible. Evan might have been an asshole at times, but he loved her and he was her first love. Was there even a chance at replacing that?

She sat down at one of the waiting areas, deciding what she should do. Would she follow him to Toronto? Or  would she go back to break the bad news?

The first plan seemed a bit risky, but Evanee wanted to take the risk. She buried her face in her hands. Even if she wanted to take that risk, she'd be running away from her problems either way.

"What's wrong?"

"I lost someone important," Evanee muttered, evidently not in the mood to speak to a sympathetic stranger.

"Well, I heard you a while ago. I think I saw a stupid Canadian run past here, Ducky," Evanee froze.

Her heart stopped and she lifted her head. "You fucking idiot. You were just going to leave like that. Just one fucking note hours before you left, you inconsiderate prick."

His warm hands gently grabbed her face. "It hurts, doesn't it? To see the person you love leave so suddenly."

This seemed like a very deranged form of payback and honestly, Evanee didn't care. She made Evan go through the same thing, but at least he was here now. He didn't leave.

"Who said I loved you, ya butt?"

"Oh, so we're going back to basics now," Evan laughed, remembering when she had first called him that. "I was starting to think you wouldn't say goodbye."

"Now what kind of cruel bastard would do that?"

"The cruel bastard who loves you," he whispered in her ear.

It all seemed to happen in slow motion. His lips on hers felt like home. It felt as if she was still a teenager, living with her Aunt Gemma and constantly going out her friends. She was back at the start. She never left.
